Sky Theatre: The changes The short story "Sky theatre", written by the contemporary African-American artist and author, Deborah Willis, illustrates the changing inside an adolescent girl [Caitlin]. By narrating the experience happened in the life of Caitlin with a first person point of view, the author shows us that the affairs of the world are inconstant and nothing good can be possessed eternally. In this story, there are two essential characters, Caitlin and Mary, who lead and help develop the story. Caitlin, the protagonist and also the round character, who envies the beauty of Mary "we loved and hated and feared her with the same fervency that we might a goddess."(201), is ordinary and somewhat self-abased "of cause, being no different from most girls, I didn't love my body"(203). Unlike Caitlin, Mary is charming, confident and she is often sought by the boys."I still remember that Mary Louise had long legs...and dark eyes."(201) It is the contract between Caitlin and Mary that creates a thought of change and permanence in Caitlin's mind, which exposes the main conflict with an epiphany of Caitlin. Before Mary dove into the water and became disable, Caitlin believed that " Some people were deemed attractive and some were not, some were popular and some were not. If this was unfair, at least it was unchanging" (203). However, after experiencing the unfortunate of Mary, there was an epiphany formed in her mind. "But suddenly we saw that life was not the still water we'd believed it to be... Fortunate's wheel had turned". (203) She started to believe something that nothing good can be possessed eternally. "For the first time, I was aware of luck--that flimsy, moody thing." (202) The conflict ends to the growth of Caitlin. At the end of the story, when Caitlin and Mary were staying outside the house talking, Mary wanted to hug Caitlin for comfort. Caitlin finally changed from being self-abased to feeling good as an ordinary girl. "Maybe she wanted me, in a
