Similarities Between The Hobbit And Roein's Greed
In The Lord of the Rings: the Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and Dwarves are already known for being greedy when it comes to gold, but Thorin is a different case. Thorin, who started greedy just like any other dwarf, had fallen to the dragon-sickness which made him even more greedy once he obtained some gold from Erebor. This gold originally belonged to the dwarves, but Smaug the dragon had stolen it, so they went and took it back. This newly found greed was no good for the group as it caused trouble. The first time Thorin’s greed caused trouble was when he was captured by the Elves. He decided it was better that they don’t know their plan, mostly to keep more of the treasure to himself. As they venture onward to the Lonely Mountain alone, the mission …show more content…
This leads to him heading over to Lake Town to cause destruction. As soon as he leaves, the group heads over to the treasure room and equip themselves with what they find. The second time Thorin brought trouble to the group was when he rejected every offer from the Bard. The Bard wanted a portion of Thorin’s treasure as he was the one who killed Smaug and it contained some treasure stolen from the lake town. This decision from Thorin upset the rest of the group and caused a bit of conflict between them. To interest Thorin he offers the Arkenstone, which Bilbo and Bombur stole from his treasure. Thorin, realizing that they stole something from his treasure, enrages him. Even after Bilbo’s determination to bring peace between the dwarves and the soldiers, Thorin decides not to give any treasure and instead goes to war for it. This battle becomes the five-army war as many armies head to fight each other over grudges. During the war Thorin’s greed truly showed as a few of his dwarven brethren died protecting his treasure. This casualty, although unfortunate, allowed Thorin to see that his actions to protect his gold from others was a

The plot of the story, The Dwarves quest to reclaim their homeland, happens because Thorin is loyal to his forefathers and feels obligated to find their long-forgotten gold, as well as restore honor to Thorin and his descendant’s name. Bilbo is also included in the company because the Dwarves are loyal to Gandalf, and trust Gandalf. Bilbo shows loyalty towards the Dwarves throughout the novel by putting himself in dangerous situations to help or save the Dwarves, such as saving them from the spiders in Mirkwood, or freeing them from the Elvish prison. Bilbo's display of loyalty and heroism causes the Dwarves to show a sense of greater devotion as the story progresses. The ending of the novel shows a form of disloyalty of the Hobbits of the Shire towards Bilbo. Bilbo's friends and relatives declared Bilbo dead, auctioned off his valued items, and later try to distance themselves from the Hobbit because they believe he has changed. Bilbo's friends and relatives from the beginning of the novel being disloyal at the end act as a contrast to the Dwarves being loyal to Bilbo at the…

“With a Shriek that deafened men, felled trees and split stone, Smaug shot spouting into the air, turned and crashed down on high ruin”(Tolkien 224).This is the last we hear of Smaug, before his death in The Hobbit. Smaug is the last major problem between the company and the treasure, and needs to be stopped in order for the treasure to go back to Thorin’s family. Bard a member of Laketown, takes the challenge trying to protect his town, and not caring or knowing what this could do for someone else, for example the dwarves. This would eventually lead to war over greed for the gold by Thorin. Something common in today's society is greed, greed for money, materialistic things, and other things. It’s become common, and is heard on the news often of people that could not keep it from happening, it leads to fights and other things, but the unlikely does happen sometimes and a accomplishment could come out of it. Unlike Bilbo, Thorin is not a hero, and even the author uses authorial intrusion to state that, “dwarves are not heroes” (213) since they value wealth over the greater good. Even though Thorin is not a hero, he still struggles with internal conflict much like Bilbo, but instead of the dual nature Bilbo struggles against, he struggles between greed and generosity. Greed causing conflicts and corruption is a recurring theme throughout the story, not just by…

A thief stole from the treasure in which the dragon was guarding. Once the dragon noticed something was missing, he went on a riot trying to find the missing item (leading to disturbance amongst the people). Beowulf is motivated by his pride and the warrior’s code (which he knows he cannot break). He continues to brag about his accomplishments and states that he is going to fight the dragon for the glory of winning. Additionally, Beowulf chose to fight the dragon to defend himself and the people of his castle (because the dragon burned it down). As Beowulf is now much older and wiser, he is more cautious when it comes to preparing for battle. Despite his age, Beowulf still chose to fight to keep his pride. He is accompanied by his men, but commands them to remain outside (still wanting to gain glory and keep his reputation). In preparation, he chooses to wear his armour and helmet, along with a sword. Since the dragon can breathe fire, he orders armour made from iron rather than wood to remain safe. One can conclude that Beowulf is much more prepared to fight the dragon than when he fought Grendel and Grendel’s mother. In conclusion, Beowulf's sword fails for the first time as he is nearing defeat. Wiglaf comes to his rescue and Beowulf and him, together, attempt to defeat the dragon. The dragon bites Beowulf in the neck, but Wiglaf lunges forward and stabs him in the stomach. Beowulf has just enough power to stab the dragon in his side, killing him. Soon after, Beowulf dies from the poison of the dragon…

Throughout The Hobbit, the dwarves and Gandalf reference to Bilbo as the “burglar” of the group. Although Gandalf recruited Bilbo to join the travelers, the dwarves skepticize the hobbit’s ability by his appearance and demeanor. However, Gandalf tells the doubting dwarves, “If I say he is a Burglar, a Burglar he is, or will be when the time comes. There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself. ” As this text excerpt shows, Gandalf specifically chose Bilbo for the burglar role because he knew that Bilbo retained the strength inside of him to become a leader. Early in the journey, Gandalf disappeared, leaving the dwarves and Bilbo with no clue as to where the wizard dissipated. After the dwarves and…

“Revenge also motivates the many feuds that the poet refers to and is a way of life — and death — for the Germanic tribes. Old enmities die hard and often disrupt attempts at peace, as the poet recognizes. Upon his return to Geatland, Beowulf (2020 ff.) speculates about a feud between Hrothgar's Scyldings and the Heathobards, a tribe in southern Denmark with whom Hrothgar hopes to make peace through the marriage of his daughter. Beowulf is skeptical, envisioning a renewal of hostilities. In fact, the Heathobards do later burn Heorot in events not covered by the poem but probably familiar to its audience. Another example of revenge overcoming peace occurs in the Finnsburh section (1068-1159).” (Anonymous). Beowulf's final battle is the result of pure revenge. A risky fire-dragon seeks revenge because a fugitive slave has stolen a valued cup from the monster's treasure-hoard. His attacks across the countryside include the burning of Beowulf's home. Beowulf then seeks his own revenge by going after the dragon. (Jenni Stenberge)…
