May 9, 2013 The themes in The Great Gatsby and “Harlem” are based on the same idea, achieving the American dream. In both stories the American dream is being put on hold. Despite that, they both are working towards the same goal; which is achieving the American dream; they are doing it in different ways. In the book The Great Gatsby, the main character is chasing a dream that fake and phony. His dream is to get Daisy to be with him. All she wants is material things and doesn’t care about anyone else. Gatsby decided that she was his American dream when he went off to war and couldn’t stop thinking about her.
