Similarities Between Daily Fantasy Sports And Online Sports
Daily fantasy sports have exploded on the scene over the last ten years. It is a game where you pick sports players from multiple teams to create your own fantasy team. Once you have created your team you inject your team into a league for a predetermined amount of money. If your fantasy team does well you will win money in return. On the other hand, betting on sports online is where you wager an amount of money on an entire sports team to win a game or match. According to the “2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Act”, daily fantasy sports was deemed a game of skill, therefore legal; however online sports betting is considered all chance, making it illegal. Daily fantasy sports and online sports betting are both methods of wagering money on sports …show more content…
In 2006 US lawmakers made it illegal to bet on sports online. Daily fantasy sports did not fall under this law.. Since managers must choose players from multiple teams DFS was determined to be a game of skill rather than gambling. However, certain states felt otherwise about the topic. Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, New York, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, Texas, and Washington State all decided that it was in fact gambling and prohibited the participation in DFS for money. They accomplish this by not allowing a manager to play in pay leagues if their IP address is located in one of those states. They can make educated guesses when picking players. The same can be said for online sports betting. Someone could have the insight and luck to bet on the right sports team or teams on any certain day. Although, the outcome for either daily fantasy sports and online sports betting is ultimately unpredictable. In regards to that money is wagered on both platforms in an effort to win money. The only difference is one is legal in most states. The other has been deemed illegal by the US government. If certain states decided to make it unlawful to play DFS for money, one would think they recognize the possible similar negative effects it has as with online sports betting. With the basis of both being so similar, why isn’t daily fantasy sports considered

    The expansion of legalized gambling poses a number of issues for policymakers. Two related issues, which have not been dealt with extensively from a public policy perspective, are examined in this commentary: state responsibility for addressing pathological and problem gambling, and the legal status and regulation of Internet gambling. A review of the recommendations of the 1998 National Gambling Impact Study Commission on pathological and problem gambling as well as state policies and practices indicates that little has been accomplished in dealing with the need for education, prevention, and treatment. Confusing and contradictory legislation and policies abound. Internet gambling flourishes, and federal and state governments are ambivalent about legalizing it. Both problem gambling and regulation of Internet gambling urgently need attention. The legalization and regulation of commercial gambling involves a wide range of public policy issues. These include such matters as how jurisdictions decide to legalize gambling in the first place, and what forms of gambling to legalize (e.g., lotteries, casinos, pari-mutuel racing, bingo). Another policy issue faced by jurisdictions that already have some form of legal gambling is the decision of whether or not to expand existing forms or add new ones. Once gambling has been legalized, jurisdictions face the issue of how to regulate it. For gambling businesses to succeed, gamblers need to be confident that the games are honest and that they will be paid if they win. One role of regulatory agencies is to ensure that gambling activities occur in such a manner that these conditions are met. Decisions about all these matters are made in a highly politicized environment and are shaped by a variety of competitive forces.
