Silver Chromate Lab Report
Theoretical Ksp value of silver chromate taken from table 17.1 on p. 5, Lesson 17.

% error = (experimental – theoretical) x 100 theoretical = (1.6 x 10-11 – 1.1 x 10-12) x 100 1.1 x 10-12 = 1354.545455

Therefore, the percentage error is 1400% (rounded to significant figures) and this is a large percentage error.

c. There are a couple of sources of error that could have contributed to this large percentage error. One could have been that the beaker was left in a spot where the temperature was not 25 °C. The Ksp values found in table 17.1 were measured at 25°C (standard conditions) which means if the experiment was done at a different temperature

Conclusion: The purpose of this lab was to visually see the chemical change that was taking place when hydrates gain and lose water. The formula for blue hydrate is anhydrous copper (ii) sulfate (CuSO4). The percent error for the mass of water is -94.40%. The effect of the hydrate not being heated long enough would result in water still being in the hydrate. If the test tube was not dried completely prior to the initial measurement it would cause the data to follow that incorrect measurement to be false and it would also add more water into the hydrate than what was initially projected. If the anhydride was allowed to sit over before the final mass measurement was taken it would result in more water loss from the hydrate. The moles of CuSO4…

The group first designed the materials to create and hold the .75 agarose gel and experiment. Everything except the comb was made of ¼ inch Acrylic Plexiglass. The glass helped the group see what was going on in the experiment. The comb was 3D printed to be more accurate. One material was a casting tray which held the Gel in future steps. The casting tray had to hold at least 50 mL of liquid. They didn’t want the casting tray to hold much more than 50mL or else they’d be wasting materials. The group sealed two sides of the casting tray to the base with Bostik All Weather Sealant. The…

    1. Describe the mechanism by which green fluorescent protein (GFP) is able to emit fluorescent light and why ultraviolet light is required to visualise it. (5 marks) When GFP is hit with UV light, the chromophore is hit by a photon. This changes the chromophore from ground state (A) to A*, which is a highly excitable state. Due to such a highly excitable state not being able to remain so for very long, the A* state chromophore emits a proton, lowering its state to I*, the energetic I.…

While performing the lab experiments in the first unit, my observation included finding the appropriate tools in the kit in order to carry out the tasks. These experiments really showed me how to differentiate the types of tools we are using and understand the differences and reason for the differences in each. Touch was a big activated sense in these experiments, the heat from boiling the water and the cold ice from the temperature labs allowed for the connection between the results and the way the temperature felt.…

    Lab on Silver Nitrate

The purpose of this lab was to see how silver nitrate affects the reactive Halogens and to see if it formed a precipitate. Most results were the same where a precipitate formed. Some took longer than others to form where as others had no effect to the silver nitrate. Two ways to improve the lab would be to have a measured dropper, and to set up more trials of each solution. I believe if we had a measured dropper we could measure how much liquid actually came out. I think this theory could be valuable because the size of the droplets varied each time. Also since the variation of the size in droplets of silver nitrate, I also believe we should have tested the experiment once more for accuracy.…

The fluorene and fluorenone mixture was separated by first dissolving the mixture in heptane. Since “like dissolves like”, fluorene dissolves with the non-polar heptane and the polar fluorenone dissolves in the polar ethyl acetate solvent. This phenomenon was illustrated in class before the experiment, when it was pointed out why water will not dissolve fluorene, fluorenone, or transstilbene as readily as a nonpolar solvent such as heptane or toluene, or a polar eluent such as ethyl acetate. Those solvents have a much more similar structure to the solutes, whereas water’s structure is much different, making it not as ideal as a…

In case ( ), there is not too much difference between Ex and REx, and either could be used to determine the accuracy of x. In case ( ), the value of y is of magnitude 106, the error Ey is large, and the relative error REx is small. In this case, y would probably be considered a good approximation to y*. In case ( ), z is of magnitude 10-6 and the error Ez is the smallest of all three cases, but the relative error REz is the largest. In terms of percentage, it amounts to 25%, and thus z is a bad approximation to z*.…
