Significant Moment
I sighed and leaned back into my seat. It made a squeaky noise. I had just been given as assignment where I needed to write about a person who had made a great influence in my life. As I sat silently and listened in my seat, my mind went racing to the past, searching for ideas and digging up precious memories. It had been years since I looked back at those memories but I still remember them. By the end of class that day, I had already decided on whom to write about. I remember that momentous time in my life like it was yesterday.
Two years ago on a hot Wednesday afternoon on the month of August, as I was walking home from school, I kept replaying the

After he had set the pancakes on the table, he pulled up a chair across me, sat down and put his eyeglasses on. For a man of his age, he always seemed younger than he really is. He wore his usual clothing, the kind he wears on hot days. His Hawaiian shirt would always have the first three buttons unbuttoned. Along with that, he had on his favorite pair of white shorts. Sometimes, I even wonder if he had been a surfer.
He took a sip from his coffee mug and went back to his puzzle book. I took advantage of the silent moment to eat a few pancakes. I hated disappointing him so I decided not to tell him about speech class. After I hastily stuffed myself with eight delicious pancakes and two glasses of iced tea, I stood up slowly making an effort to leave. However, a single question came from him asking if something was wrong made me want to tell him everything not because I expected him to tell me it was ok, but because I felt guilty not telling him. His voice was also so promising that I knew that he would

I awoke today with the light streaming into my room and hearing the birds chirping in the distance. As I regained my conscience, I smelled the mold and felt damp room conditions all around me that imprisoned me. It reminded me of what would have happened only in a nightmare. It was only yesterday that Corey, Nurse, Hale and I had gone to help the accused women. So many times I felt that I could win the battle, yet just as many times I could feel the rope slipping through my fingers.…

On the way home I pulled out all my supplies and gently unwrapped each one. I carefully put them in my box and tucked the big red tablet under my arm. When we got to the house, I jumped out of the car and ran to my room. I couldn’t wait to start writing and perfecting my alphabet. My mother had already taught me to write my name and I could sing the alphabet song since I learned to talk. I wanted to practice my letters because I wanted to write better than my dad. I had heard everyone say that his handwriting was “horrible”. “He should have been a doctor!” my grandma always said.…

So I knew that this little sportsmen club in Alpena would give me a run for my brain. All that was going through my mind was that I had to pass and make my parents proud. In a class for four hours hours that I had been wishing I was at home. My mother always went with me to the class and she was brave she took me if the class was in day or night.…

I scribbled my last few words on the paper. I looked to my rose tattoo planted on my wrist, I hope you liked it as much as I did Mom. Suddenly, I heard a faint creek from behind me. My head snapped around to my temporary bedroom door. It was wishful thinking, but for a moment I thought it was my mother. "Hello?" I climbed back through the window and slammed it shut. "Hello?" I repeated. My feet tiptoed across the floor, careful not to make a sound.…

The year is 1943. Situated in my little corner, I lie in wait, wondering if I will ever be cherished again. Times of long ago come to my mind, when every day, Michelle would come and sit at her little desk and type away. Such blissful times they were, when she would stride through that creaky, rustic door with a grin so cheerful, that it would light the whole room. Pulling back the chair, she would sit down and write optimistic tales. She would compose stories of princes and princesses and happily ever afters. Stories of daddies coming home from the war and being reunited with their families.…

It had been a frigid all day long and the closer it got to the end of the day the colder it got. I had been nervous about the interview since the day before. The interview had been set up for it to be after school in a classroom. Butterflies had been fluttering around in my stomach and the closer it got to the end of the day the more anxious the butterflies had become. I was in my final class trying to focus on writing my final essay before christmas break but it was no use. I was more focused on going over what I would say and do during the interview that was coming up closer than I expected. The final bell of the day had rung and off I went to the designated room which was 232 where I would meet and interview my veteran. He had been teaching…

Three years later, Tyler maintained a 93 average which he would have never achieved without the deep rooted trait of hard work instilled into him by his mother. Tyler didn’t acknowledge that either. Senior year came and September turned into December in what felt like minutes. Tyler went onto his Common Application and added Dartmouth to his list. He grumbled at the fact that they had a writing supplement, and read through the choices. Then his eyes stopped upon the question, “how has your hero influenced your life?” Tyler sat and pondered if this was the question that would get him in. People that he could choose for that supplement ran through his head, but then he stopped when he thought about his mother. Tyler thought about all the things that his mother had did for him. He closed his computer and thought more about it for days. Tyler was flooded with the realization of all the sacrifice his mother did for him and how it all influenced his life. He realized that he wasn’t alone in his life because his mom was there every step of the way. Tyler sat back down, and opened up his laptop to start to write the essay, but the only thing he could write was… “Thank you…

A chilly breeze struck my face as I lower the window of the car, a 2010 Dodge, rushing passed buildings while leaves begin to fall off the trees. Mom and I were passing the local cemetery on our way to the store and I think of him. Without a warning, tears slowly make their way down the sides of my face and it takes me back to the Winter of 2010 when I knew, knew that he would be taking his very last breath.…
