Significant Life Lessons
Throughout my life I've experienced a lot of significant lessons. The lessons I learned shaped me to be the person I am today. My father being a deputy sheriff for 15 years, knew the lesson that I needed learn to keep me out of trouble. He taught me four basic rules to keep me out of trouble. The rules consist of, no means no, stop means stop now, keep your hands to yourself and mind your own business. These rules have kept me out of trouble ever since I heard my father udder them. I've lived my life by them and they are the resoan why I act and do the things I do. Growing up I was always the kid who couldn't keep his mouth shut or mind his own business. For a while I did not understand what minding my own business meant. I had a lot of difficulty

Gaines’ novel, “A Lesson Before Dying,” depicts a setting of a small town in rural Louisiana in the 1940’s. Slavery was abolished in 1865 in the 1940’s, however African Americans were still not treated with equality. Entire towns were still segregated; schools, churches, stores, bars, etc. African Americans were no longer slaves, but still lived on White American plantations, tending to their fields, houses and families. Grant Wiggins, the main character in the novel, is an African American teacher in the small town who is challenged to teach Jefferson, a prisoner on death row, a lesson before dying. He is confronted with many race related issues throughout the story.…

My parents are always willing to teach their four children a lesson. Most of the time they only have to teach my brothers a lesson because my sister and I are angels! That statement may not be true, but in my mind it is. My parents also think you’re never too old to learn new lessons, even to this day. Whenever I do something stupid that results in me getting hurt, my dad always reminds me that “education is expensive”.…

The one time that I felt like I could get away with disobeying and then I got busted. I was officially grounded for one month, which meant only driving the car to school and back. My social life became dead for the next month considering that I wasn’t allowed to hang out with friends. I learned a valuable lesson about obedience and how I should obey these rules at all times. An example of obedience is, sometimes as humans we think that we can get away with things that don’t seem that big of a deal at the time. My mom told me this story, which taught me a valuable lesson. The story was about this lady who was driving home from church. It was too much of a hassle to put her baby in his or her seatbelt properly so she thought it would be okay to hurry and drive home holding her child, considering that they only lived a block away. After a few miles she got in a car accident and the airbag killed her child immediately. If she would have only obeyed the laws and put her child in the seatbelt like she was supposed to do then she would have never lost her child who she loved so dearly. She had to live with knowing that her child would never have the opportunity to live another day. She would never be able to see her child graduate from high school, get married, and become a mother of her own children. Day by day she faces the choice that she made and she will forever regret that poor decision. So next time you disobey the rules which you were given, think about this mother and the pain that she has to go through each day. We have rules here for a reason, which will help us in the long run. Next time you get asked to do something that you know is disobedient to the rules will you do…

Whenever a chore was forgotten or the tv remote was missing my sibling's first response was to blame me. Although some of the time I was in fact at fault, the very idea that I was always the first to be accused deeply upset me. So much so, that it began to shape my actions. I wanted to avoid any and all possible faults so I would no longer be considered a suspect. In other words, I wanted to seek perfection. After several days of that treacherous pursuit I realized I wasn't really living, I was simply monitoring every action to avoid all conflict. It was this realization that truly made me recognize the importance of being able to make mistakes. In situations in which my integrity was challenged I always learned from mistakes I had made, but I also learned a way to live without making the same mistake again. I believe making mistakes is an important part of growing up, but it is even more important to be able to learn how to move on with life and not repeat your mistakes. Being in an environment like Country Day that allows you to make mistakes but also have to take responsibility for them is the best possible way to learn, mature, and truly find where your morals…

Annie Thermidor Life Lessons from Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler. Main theme: In this book, Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross teamed up with end-of-life specialist David Kessler to write for the first time about life and living. The authors present fourteen lessons passed on to us from the dying to help us deal better with the issues we face in life. Both authors consider the dying as great teachers because, "it's when we are pushed to the edge of life that we see life more clearly" (Kessler & Kubler-Ross, 2000, p15).…

My life started out like the beginning of a perfect childhood. Both of my parents had steady, well-paying government jobs, we had moved into a new home and even bought a puppy. All was harmonious, until my parents decided we would have a better life in Canada. Leaving behind everything and everyone we knew was probably one of the hardest things my parents ever did for my brother and me. Struggling to fit in and assimilate was least of our problems, trying to make a decent income became a priority. My parents, who were well educated and accomplished, were compelled to settle for multiple meager jobs like a cashier at a fast food restaurant or a security guard at an apartment building. They held as many jobs as they could, working…

Make good decisions. Do the right thing, no matter who is watching. Those words have been repeated and instilled in my mind since I was a young child. My parents always harped on doing the right thing, and making good choices, because some decisions made at an early age can follow you into adulthood. Unfortunately, sometimes making a wrong decision only helps you to learn from the mistake. When I was 15 years old, my friend *Alyssa Brown (Pseudonym) was raped. She was my best friend and someone I care deeply about. We played volleyball together on the same team, had breakfast at the diner every Sunday, and watched movies in my basement every weekend. Like any relationship, we had our differences. At that age, many of my friends were maturing at dissimilar rates, and it was confusing to me some of the changes that were happening to their attitudes and opinions. Alyssa had an older sister *Lindsey, who was 19 at the time, and who wasn’t particularly the best behaved; she had been arrested a few times and needless to say didn’t surround herself with the best company. Alyssa couldn’t help who her sister brought around the house, and neither could I—although now I wish I could have.…

Growing up, my parents pushed me to be the best I could be. They let me make mistakes and used them as teachable moments. They taught me the importance of work ethic, reliability, and trustworthiness. Being reliable and trustworthy is important in both personal and work relationships. They also taught me to be kind. I strive to be kind to everyone, and treat them with respect. I try look at situations from someone else's point of view. We never know what is going on in someone else's life, so I feel it is better to treat them with kindness and respect versus being rude or disrespectful. If someone is having a bad day, I don't want to make it any worse. As I got older, I came to the quick realization that not everyone's views are the same. My parents taught me to accept people for who they are and not to hold it against them when they have do not have the same views as I do. One thing we all have in common is that we are human. We should treat each other with the respect and dignity that we would like to be treated with.…

    Personal Code of Ethics

My personal code of ethics started from my birth and continues on through the past four and a half decades. The major contributors to my code of ethics are my parents, grandparents, sisters, friends, teachers and later life experiences. My parents taught me right from wrong, while my grandparents reinforced their rules. My sisters, although they tried to steer me into mischief sometimes, never tried to teach me bad behaviors. My friends were strong contributors during the teenage years, although we did find our own mischief, it was never against our morals, values, or ethics. I believe we were regular teenagers doing normal things to keep busy (nobody ever ended up in jail because of our doings). My teachers, from grammar school through high school have all been positive influences in my life, trying to point me in the right direction and giving me strong, sound advice. My later life experiences taught me some hard lessons; to trust what I can see, not always what I hear, there are evil people in this world that only want to hurt people both mentally and physically, to depend on myself because when it comes down to it, I am really all I have (besides my children, family, and friends), and to pick myself…

My grandmother taught me how important it is to tolerate people and certain situations. She told me showing people respect will get you a long way in life, as well as seeking help in hard times and facing problems instead of running away from them. Because of this, I try to see the good in people and over look the bad. When I have a problem I think of ways to solve it. When I cannot find a solution I ask for help before things get worse.…

Be good children is extremely difficult. The children must listen to every word when the parents are trying to teach them, but the parents' words often are not reasonable to the children because the children have not enough experience to live a life in society; Thus, the children do not want to listen to their parents, and sometimes they will against back to their parents. Are there any children who against back to their parents will become good? I have seen that is one of the reasons to cause the children to become bad. Therefore, I try as much as to listen to my parents when they try to teach me something. And the most important lessons I learned from my parents are hard-working and honest.…
