Si Tu Me Olvidas Literary Devices
“Si Tú Me Olvidas” by Pablo Neruda is a poem that goes into depth about love. In this poem he explains how love can last a lifetime. It is quite a short poem compared to the longer ones I have read and only contains six stanzas. After some research, the poem is directed to a woman who is named Matilde Urrutia, and this will later be important. The style of the poem is free verse, and it contains signs of alliteration all throughout the poem. After looking it over countless times and looking up the meaning, there appears to be a great meaning to it. Each stanza talks about something different and even some may relate to one another in meaning, all the stanzas are extremely unique. The theme is of love and is that love is a powerful feeling that is a strong and amazing until it is broken. To go more into depth, I will tell the story of his life summed up and how the theme of the poem may go along with it. Now, the time period that Neruda was writing this in was definitely not a great time in his life. Neruda was a member of the Communist party and was criticized for his Chilean leadership. In 1948, he was forced into hiding and finally exiled for his actions, and the Communist party was banned in Chile. His poem was said to be most likely written during his exile because when it was published in 1952, this is when he returned home to Chile. So, it can always be about Chile and not his lover. This is a very good theory because it is highly plausible that he could stop loving Chile if Chile stopped loving or accepting him.
All in all, Pablo Neruda made an amazing poem and according to me, this is by far his best work. Whether it was Chile he was talking about or if it was his lover, Neruda made excellent points that apply to love in almost every way. He talked about how you had to take care of it, nourish it, and love back as you are loved. These are all extremely good points, and I am happy I chose this as one of my poems.
