Should I get a Tattoo?
It is becoming more normal to see tattoos in everyday society. Tattoos can have so many meanings, and the possibilities are limitless. Media, celebrities or a change in culture have made them popular in this era. I have been inspired to search for these answers after reading Stephanie Dolgoff’s Tattoo Me Again & Again. With all of this information on tattoos; I find myself questioning if i should get one myself. These days it is very common to see exposed tattoos on a regular basis. The practice of permanently putting ink on your body has even become a lifestyle for some people. Even prisoners are getting tattoos while incarcerated. What has changed in our society that has made people start glorifying tattoos? Anyone can get one; even minors with parental consent. There are many pros and cons to getting tattoos. The biggest problem with tattoo’s is the fact that they are permanent. Some say you can get a tattoo removed with expensive laser treatment, though the tattoo will soon become a scar. The only people I see benefiting from their tattoos are musicians. Many popular rappers have facial tattoo’s, why is this? There are other potential health risks to tattoos such as contracting HIV from a dirty needle, or regretting getting the tattoo. One of the biggest influences as to why people are tattooing themselves comes from the media. Musicians show off their tattoos on television and in other advertisements. These cultural influences spread across media outlets and create trends. A drastic trend has appeared recently popularized in movies such as “The Hangover”. Facial tattoos are becoming more and more prevalent. Previously these tattoos were associated with crime as displayed by prisoners and gang members. It is astonishing that our culture has changed so much that we now have idols with facial tattoos-- such as Lil Wayne. I do not have anything personal against people with facial tattoos, however when i see them I typically associate

Let’s start by picking your brain for a moment. If I were to ask you what your opinions were towards tattooing, what would your answer be? You may be surprised to know that within our society today, regardless of what your answer was, we could assume that people are divided based on each alternating view of tattoos. Some bring a more stereotypical view in that tattoos may pose a negative factor when trying to land that perfect job. Perhaps that it may symbolize that they are part of a gang, a “biker” if you will, maybe a criminal or part of a lower class in society? (Proehl 2004) Tattooing may also instill fear…

No longer the purview of bikers, punks and thugs, tattooing is increasingly practiced and appropriated by mainstream, middle class individuals (DeMello 41; Irwin 50). For many young Americans, the tattoo has taken on a decidedly different meaning than for previous generations. How society views tattoos is just controversial. To society, tattoos on well-known people are regarded as normal, however, when walking down the street, tattoos on an individual whom they do not know, is regarded as rebellion. It’s unusual, and often does not make sense to me that society despises individuals with body art, and often associates them with delinquency, however, it is depicted as normal when influential people are seen with body ink. An example would be President Theodore Roosevelt; the 32nd President of the United States. He proudly bore a tattoo of his family crest across his chest. If…

Tattooing has been around for centuries, but has just become very popular in the last several years. At one time tattoos were only associated with a bikers or gang members. These days about one-quarter of people under the age of 30 get at least one tattoo in their lifetime (Healey 1). People decide to get tattoos for varied reasons. Many do it as a memory of a loved one who is passed on or like my daughter who has “Walk With God” tattooed on the top of her right foot. As she puts it “It is just a daily reminder to keep me focused on what is right” (Henry). Others do it to express themselves or as a right of passage, like turning eighteen years old. As in my daughters case she waited until she was eighteen and up at college with her friends. To say the least I wasn’t very happy with her decision, I thought of it as a form of rebellion. However, it was her first real adult decision all on her own. After all who hasn’t done something like this when we were young?…
