Should Huckleberry Finn Be Banned? Huckleberry Finn has been and still is a book of much controversy. Many people believe that it should be banned, whilst others believe that it should not be banned. The people that argue that it should be banned state that the book has irrelevant and hurtful reference to the slang word for an African-American. With this argument, the importance of the literature itself is completely ignored. The most important reason that it should not be banned is that the students reading the book are taught by teachers the context and history of the word "nigger". Many people think the word is vulgar and puts much doubt in the book's message. If so, the parents can take action and have their student removed from discussion in the reading. …show more content…
The one specific word that is used over and over agin in the book. What is most commonly ignored is the book's theme and morals. Many people choose to not have intentions of reading because of the assumption of profanity. These people that assume, do not understand the book's true meaning. It is one of America's first great works of literature. With that said, it is of age. In older times, the derogatory for a black person was a very common. The misunderstanding today cause people to not understand that the word was a very common thing and Twain had no intention of insulting the black race in any way. He was simply telling the story as it was with the use of the word because the word was used in those
