Should Columbus Day Be A Hero?
WHY COLUMBUS DAY SHOULD NOT BE A HOLIDAY Christopher Columbus is a fraud, not to mention a cruel and ruthless murderer. In 1492, Christopher Columbus set out from Spain to find new land to bring back riches, and in return he found the Americas. However, Columbus harmed a few people on his way during his voyage. Is that someone you would like to call a hero? Columbus Day should absolutely not be a holiday. Christopher Columbus could even be classified as a murderer, and I would not think that a hero was also someone who was a villain to nearly millions of others. He “discovered” the New World just like a meteorite had “discovered” the dinosaurs. Relating to that statement, Columbus commit mass genocide. He had taken advantage of the Natives,

I believe Columbus does deserve his reputation. He faced many challenges, and worked hard through his four voyages. Starting from his first one, according to the movie, Columbus was rejected from the university, he was rejected by the king of Portugal, King John. Yet he did not give up hope, he went to the queen of Spain, Queen Isabella, who finally agreed to sponsor his voyage. Columbus set out without knowing where he was going, the only directional sense he was measuring through the speed of the boat, a very inefficient technique. Finally, when he arrived in the new world, he met the first nations, he was respected their beliefs, and didn’t not force them to become Catholic. According to my research, Columbus was one of the first to discover…

I must admit, at the onset, that I have a pretty negative thoughts about Columbus. My teenage idealization of the man who "discovered" America was crushed when I read the text book and hearing class discussions. From the book, I learned how Columbus enslaved and murdered thousands of Arawaks and other Native American people. The New World he had once portrayed as a paradise had swiftly spun into something much darker. Columbus's actions were unjustifiable immoral, to say the very least, inhumane. However, he honestly believed that he was doing a good thing by "converting" the Arawaks. Based on the cruel historical events and the fact that he didn’t really discover America. Why should he be celebrated?…

Christopher Columbus day should not remain a holiday because it is just another event on the calendar to keep track of and it could make some native American tribes aggravated if it stays. Even if Columbus day isn’t as bad as it seems, the people have the right to want to get rid of it. Although some people will get mad if this day leaves, they should know that “Columbus was a cruel slave trader who brought about the mass killing of native people.”. Columbus day was supposed to be a day when America was found, but others go deeper than that and want to get rid of it. All people, Americans and Native Americans get to have a say in this, whether it be to stay or it is to…

Columbus Day, the second Monday in October, represents the day Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas. America should no longer continue to celebrate Columbus Day because he had a miserable legacy, he did not really discover America, and he was cruel. He had a bad legacy because he committed genocide, started slavery and racism. Columbus did not really find the United States, there were indigenous people there already that were settled and lived off the land. On top of all that he was very cruel, he would cut their hands off if they did not give him the quarterly quota of gold dust, he roasted the chiefs in fires, and his treatment was so bad that people tried to kill themselves .…

Christopher Columbus is well known in history as the greatest explorer of all time. His voyages and discoveries of new land inspired many other Europeans to explore the world. One of his biggest and most significant discoveries, was the New World. During his voyage, Columbus kept a detailed record of what occurred during his time of exploration. His record is a clear depiction of his poor treatment of the Natives who already lived in the New World. Christopher Columbus can in no way, shape, or form be considered a hero. A hero is someone who performs good deeds for the sake of others and not for their own benefit. Christopher Columbus did not do a single good deed in any of his four voyages in the late 1400 's. Christopher Columbus was not the founder of the Americas we live in today because he did not set a single foot on these grounds, even if he did there were already the natives who inhabited the land. When he first sited land it was further down south in the Caribbean Islands. Christopher Columbus can be considered the enforcer of slavery. Slavery was already going on when he left Spain. However, the natives could be used for trade with other goods, this was known as the slave trade. He and his crew basically enslaved a whole race of men, women, and children. When Christopher Columbus discovered what he thought to be the "New World", he had no idea that he would find a whole race of people. His intensions were to go out and find gold and spices to bring back to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in Spain.…

Columbus did “discover” America, but the holiday should have a different name like something that involves the day of discovering America. American Indians already had lived there and Columbus treated them as slaves. But in their times slavery was okay and that’s what people don’t understand. It wasn’t until later we learned that it wasn’t right. We have a day off school for Martin Luther King Jr Day, yet there are plenty of other people who said great speeches who aren’t idolized. We should at least get school off for Columbus Day and think of it more of two different kinds of people coming together…

Columbus day is a national holiday in America celebrating the man that “discovered’ America. The problem is that he did nothing good for America. He brought slaves and disease to America, or what he thought was Asia. Columbus was an Italian, when Italy didn’t want to pay for his voyages he went to Spain's king and queen to ask them for the money, they agreed on the condition that he paid them back. When Columbus got to what he thought was Asia, but in reality was the caribbean islands, he captured slaves and sent them back to spain. This didn’t make him as much money as he hoped because most of the slaved died on the ships returning from the caribbean. When he went back he had the help of hundreds of slaves to help him find gold. When the…

After some researching, It has become clear that Columbus Day is actually quite controversial in regards to whether or not he should be celebrated. Firstly, one of the main points I noticed was his instigation and condoning of slave trade. While I certainly agree that this was terrible, it is also true that it was a cultural norm at this time. Additionally, even though Columbus wasn’ the first to discover America, he did help bridge the gap between the old and new world which led to the exchange of cultures, products, etc. This was important for the development and spread of the western civilizations. It is likely that without his brave efforts, the world would not be the place it is today. Overall, while it may not be necessary to deem an…
