Short Story Symbolism
Each symbol describes its own perspective throughout the context. Unlike other stories symbolism wasn’t obvious in these stories, it was signs of symbols that allowed you to know that the story had some kind of symbolism inside. Symbolism throughout these stories: “The Story of an Hour”, “Feather Pillow”, “A Rose from Emily”, and “Hills Like White Elephants” allows you to understand the stories better and what the writer is trying to convey.

Symbolism is one of the most important literary terms used often by many writers to convey their central idea. According to the Longman Contemporary Dictionary, symbolism can be defined as a device that evokes more than a literal meaning from a person, object, image or word. The author Isabel Allende in his short story, "And of Clay are we created," Toni Cade Bambara in "The lesson" and finally Ernest Hemingway the author of the short story "Hills like White Elephants" adopts the use of symbolism to suggest their main point.…

Symbolism is used to provide meaning to the writing beyond what is actually being described. The short story “Young Goodman Brown” is a perfect example of symbolism, the story is completely symbolic. The major symbol throughout the story is his wife Faith. She puts pink ribbons in her hair to display her faith. The pink ribbons on Faith’s cap is a mixture of white for purity and scarlet for sin. At the beginning of the story Faith is characterized as pure and innocent. However, in the forest her sexuality and flaws come out, she loses it which shows that she is losing her innocence to the Coven. The forest symbolizes more of the struggle of innocence and evil rather than one or the other. He is being enticed by the forest. The staff that transports…

Themes in stories can be developed through many different means. It can be openly stated or just simply implied. Throughout history symbolism has been used to develop stories. Even in the bible there are multiple symbols that can be found. J.D. Salinger uses symbols to help readers understand the overall message and theme of his book The Catcher in the Rye. From Holden’s red hunting hat to Allie’s baseball mitt, symbols are constantly being thrown into the story. One other symbol that I think is highly significant is the ducks in Central Park.…

The beginning of the story is a perfect example of symbolism. Symbolism is something that stands for or represents something else. There were several good examples of symbolism in this story. “Under the old woman’s arm they placed there hard fist (which afterward smelled of decay and musk---the fermenting scent of onion skins and rotting greens). The words the author uses actually jump from the page to your nostrils. I could smell the aroma of musk as I read that part of the story.” When they passed…
