Wolf vs. ship Two stories “Battle Royal “(1947) by Ralph Ellison’s and Training Day (2001) by Antoine Fuqua’s. In both story main characters who have the goal and both of them try to achieve that goal but each of them is going to achieve that goal by different way. In Training Day the main character Alonzo tries to achieve his goal by brutal, cruel way, he is portrayed as a wolf in this story. The other character in “Battle Royal” portrayed as shy, intelligent, young man who wants to achieve his goal by his own struggle, he is shown in this story as a ship. "To protect the sheep you gotta catch the wolf, and it takes a wolf to catch a wolf.” One of them Training Day Alonzo Harris the black headstrong officer and willed cop in 2001 for whose years experience in the streets who mistrust his methods, and Jake Hoyt , a white rookie cop, experienced the first training day of his new job and he has first day with Alonzo. This film shows that Alonzo is cruel and despite circumstances he will do everything necessary to get what he wants. To achieve his goal he is going to use young partner to kill a drug dealer and pick up a lot of money for his own purposes. The first scene of the film shows how is referred to a “wolf”, he takes over white rookie cop, when he forced him to smoke drugs in order to use it against him latter on, for his own purpose. Scene when Jake get involved into a fight in order to safe a girl's life from being raping, Alonzo stood aside and watched, he did not participate in the fight until one of the rapists personally insulted Alonzo, but after all he lets them go because his belief of "street justice". His behavior, conversation, power, controlling, mind games, power critical, his car also speaks about his character because of that style that is often associated with gangsters. His behavior shows that he is portrayed as a wolf in this situation. He also shows his wild character in the scene where he kills his "friend", he shoots Roger for his own purpose. On other hand “Battle Royal” is a story of the main character, the narrator as a black young man in the early 1930’s, struggling with his own self-worth. Since the beginning of the story the main character was very intelligent and because of this, the great white businessmen ask him to give a speech at a hotel. When he was delivered to that hotel he felt as a “ship” in tight group, he stood to the some of the most important white men in the town , they put him through many abusive acts for their enjoyment. This boys were as a ship in front of those rich, influential white men. When naked women danced he felt at the same level with her, because they both were in front of those men, and they both suffered to satisfy their needs. He was fighting in purpose just to deliver his speech, not because he was enjoying the fight, during the fight he was desperate and felt sick and “alone with an unknown danger”.( pg.289) After all was done, the boy delivered his speech, during the speech the boy couldn’t talk because he was swallowing blood and he was tortured; people was yelling at him, throwing nasty comments, this made him feel as a ship even more. Both stories are about achieving goal, but each of them does it in a different way, the first one Training Day (2001) by Antoine Fuqua’s, at the beginning the main character was compared to the wolf, he thought that he would get what he wanted he believed into “street justice”. He referred to controlling, manipulating and it didn’t help him. It shows that despite the fact that Alonzo was powerful as a wolf and he also took power over those people around him, all of his actions lead him to the death. Nor money nor killing of his “friend”, not even control over the people didn’t safe him from his death, he chose the wrong way and end up tragically. In the other text “Battle Royal “(1947) by Ralph Ellison’s focused on intelligence and self-worth, he went through the struggle by his own, to get to his goal, even if he wasn’t powerful, all those men made fun of him, and made him felt as a ship, but he got what he wanted through struggle and his hard work. In the beginning of the story he referred as a ship, not really confident, intelligent and in reward he succeed in the end.

Having a hard time finding a job because you are “over qualified”? Well, not to worry, you are not the only one. According to Statistics Canada, one in every five people in the work force who have a university education are “overqualified”. Overqualified is defined as,” more experienced and educated than you need to be to do a particular job”(macmillan). In other words, all those hard years, and those thousands of dollars spent on higher education, won’t always pay off. In Adrian Wooldridge’s article”Dr. Dole Queue”, he claims that degrees have lost their value. Not only are students being ripped off financially, but, according to Wooldridge, they are also being stripped of their “best years”. For example, In 2008, according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, over 10,500 Americans with PhDs or professional degrees were employed as “cashiers”, over 27,400 as shop assistants and over 4,700 as hairdressers, hairstylists or cosmetologists. In other words, Students spend many years and thousands of dollars trying to achieve their degrees, BA’s and PHD’s, and in the end, there may not even be a worthy pay off. With, more and more students receiving these degrees they are not befitting themselves, rather they are just simply neutralizing each other’s qualifications. Wooldridge argues that spending time in the workforce, rather then enrolled in higher education, it will benefit a person alot more due to the fact that the on hands experience is what will help you to succeed. In my essay I will demonstrate how Wooldridge argues that the problem with students spending more time enrolling in higher education is that they diminishes the value of their qualifications, which in turn causes it to become more and more specialized. It is clear that higher education is no longer as respectable as it has been in the past.…

In “The Boat” by Alistair Macleod, the boat, and the ill-fitting clothes he wore significantly represent the confinement and the father’s inability to break free from tradition, reinforcing that tradition can suppress one’s dream for greater things. To begin, the boat itself is a symbol of the fathers bounding to the sea, showing his obligation to follow customs. The boat is categorize with a “marine clutch and a high speed reverse gear and was painted on an oblong plate across her stern. Jenny Lynn had been my mother’s maiden name and the boat was called after her as another link in the chain of tradition”(Macleod 3) The high speed reverse gear depicts how the father is not moving forward along with the light green name of Jenny Lynn that demonstrates the father’s sacrifice for the fishing custom to support his family. The Jenny Lynn that he receives through tradition gives him a constant reminder that his way of life may never change and that his dreams are out of his reach. Furthermore, the clothing in his closet symbolizes the father’s imprisonment with tradition. The narrator mentions “his ill-fitted serge suit, the two or three white shirts that strangled him and the square black shoes that pinched” (Macleod 4) The square black shoes that pinched him means that the life of fishing that he inherits does not fit, the life he lives is simply to overpowering that it damages him. The white shirts that suffocates him shows the struggles he faces everyday that he is unable to separate from. His attire is so inflexible that it was leaving him trapped in one place incapable to grasp his own desires. Lastly, at the father’s death his departure speculates that it is suicide to liberate his son and himself from an unhappy future bringing the fishing tradition with him. When the father’s body is discovered “the white green stubble of his whiskers had continued to grow in death. Physically as he lay there with the brass chains on his wrist and seaweed in his hair”(Macleod…

The overall objective of the book is to teach new, and old, leaders to become better leaders. While anyone can benefit from reading this book, the intended audience is leaders in any organization. One statistic that should be alarming to all leaders of businesses was that 65 percent of people leave their companies because of the managers (Abrashoff, 2002). How do leaders change that statistic? Abrashoff believes that running a ship is very similar to running any business; it takes motivating a crew to perform at the best of their abilities to achieve optimal efficiency and completion of tasks. He successfully takes his experiences from leading a Naval crew and teaches the audience how to apply it to their organizations. Along with highlighting every winning moment he and his crew experienced on the USS Benfold, Captain Abrashoff also shows failing moments the team had to endure. Those examples show the audience that in order to succeed, there has to be some trials along the way.…

The short story “The Boat” by Alistair MacLeod that was written in 1968, is a story about conflict between tradition and freedom. The father is a fisherman who only continues his job because he is chained through the past of others. The family son is restricted from his education because he spends a lot of time on the boat worried about his parents expectations. His mother believes that he will carry on and take his fathers place in the fisherman position. When the father is not out on the boat, he is in his room reading, to escape the world of imprisonment and monotonous duty. The mother of the family believes that the tradition of being a fisherman in the boat, is the only right way for her husband and children to continue living their lives. The author is trying to tell us to follow our dreams in life that won't keep us chained and unhappy and to never limit your options. As the father is unable to live freely, he is chained to his job through tradition.…

Sadna pursed her lips. “Sometimes people have more will to live. Or you don’t hit them right and they don’t lose their blood fast enough. Sometimes they just don’t stop the way you want them to” (Page 174). My observations in this quote are you can’t just kill anyone; you have to kill them in their own certain way. You can’t just stop their life the way you want to and some people don’t lose their blood fast enough. My reactions in this quote are I was amazed and confused about how people died. I never knew that they have to die in their own way. My interpretation about the sentence “Or you don’t hit them right and they don’t lose their blood fast enough” is sometimes if you hit someone and you want them to die on that hit, it might not have ended up the way you wanted it to because there blood might not lose fast enough. Also, every person has a weak spot. If you might have possibly hit them in that spot, they might have not lost their blood that fast . I have 2 predictions in this quote. One of my predictions are it would be harder to kill anyone else because of their own blood and because of their own personality. I also predict that it would take hard speed, power, and strength to kill anyone else. My inner feeling about this quote is it would be intensely dangerous to risk your life trying to kill someone in their own way. I have one opinion about this quote. My opinion is you can’t always win in a fight even if you start first because according to the to the quote, it says “sometimes if you don’t hit them right they don’t lose their blood fast enough”. The opponent could have an advantage because if they don’t lose their blood fast enough, they could kill the other person in a matter of time. My question about this quote is what does it mean by “you can’t just kill anyone; you have to kill them in their own certain way”?…

As for Ellison's "Battle Royale " , the title itself conveys that there is a battle between the black and the white people and tells that this battle is of the long kind .He says in the story that it may stay for centuries . The grandfather's scenes at the beginning and at the end of the story emphasize that this long battle is inherited from ancestors to descendents . The narrator of the story sets imagery about himself . He calls himself invisible to declare that he is neglected . No one sees him to let him get his rights and to be dealt with as equal as the white men . Animal imagery is used in the battle scene to represent how…

    Coyote and Bear

The Native American tale of "Coyote and Bear", originally translated from oral tradition in nineteen six by G. A. Dorsey in the book The Pawnee, Mythology, Part I, tells us the story of Coyote who accidentally meets Bear, and in order to protect himself from being killed by Bear, starts to make up self praising stories to impress Bear. Eventually, Coyote convinces Bear, but after a few hesitant moves, Bear realizes that Coyote was lying. The tale then, ends up with the murder of Coyote by Bear. The most relevant literary figure used in the tale is the trickster, which is, in the study of folklore, a god, a spirit, or simply a human hero who breaks god´s or nature´s rules, sometimes with bad intention, but usually with final positive effects. Most of the times, these broken rules take the form of tricks. Tricksters can be cunning, or foolish, or both. They are often very funny even though sometimes considered sacred. The present tale is part of the Native American oral tradition of the trickster, which is esthetically simple but considered sacred at the times, in which Coyote represents the figure of survival, who would invent any story to get away from death. Bear represents the nature, and its normal evolution of the species through the predation process. However, being myself aware of the likelihood…
