Speech—SIS Embrace Change

I’d like to begin with a quote by Mary Shelley from Frankenstein, “Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change.”

Shelley’s quote on change feels especially pertinent today of all days as I officially mark the end of my graduate school career with UT’s School of Information Sciences. During these two years, I have grown quite comfortable and accustomed to the life of a grad student. However, nothing is quite as exciting as I—and all of us graduating today—set another foot into the future.

I feel prepared—I cannot speak for all of you—but I feel prepared to take my first steps into the changing field of information sciences, and I owe that preparation not only to the professors and instructors

We all have a community to call on when we’ve hit stumbling blocks in our professional growth or when we want someone to share in our achievements. When we all face our next big change, or challenge, let us remember to embrace it, too, because we do not have to face it alone. Let us also remember the teamwork and collaboration that this program has fostered in all of us because it is one of the most important skills we can take with it to build a better world for those we seek to help whether in a public, school, or academic library, an information center, a government agency, or in a position that has not been created yet.

Margaret Mead said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” I certainly agree with that statement because who else but librarians are more thoughtful and committed to changing the world. I’d like to end by reminding everyone here today: Embrace change in our world, embrace change in those we help, but most importantly let us not forget to embrace change in

Within the chapters five and six of, They Say/I Say, by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, they believe that while writing an essay, one may use many tools to help them strengthen their arguments. For example. Instead of rambling on about why a writer’s argument is credible, a writer may address criticism that others might say, and can use counter arguments to lengthen and strengthen their argument. When a writer does not implement counter arguments within their text, they may seem close minded. However, when using a counter, or what Birkenstein and Graff call a “Naysayer,” a writer must accurately represent that individuals view. When a person is addressing a nay-sayer, they can either keep them anonymous, or give them proper labels. Although,…

As much as I believed I loathed change and do not do well with change, I was again mistaken. I look for innovative ways to better myself all the time. Not only did I feel proud for making interdisciplinary connections when explaining things, but I was also able to support my friends. My peers would walk into math tutoring completely clueless, but would walk out offering to teach others the material. The excited yells of kids who received As on tests for the first time was worth more than anything else I could’ve done in my free time. Beyond that, I realized support is a universal need. By believing in my peers’ ability, I helped them overcome hurdles that had been there for a long time. Most of all, contributing to the community wasn’t about the hours I put into it, but rather the effects that my service had. My actions can protect the future from the chaos of potentiality.…

The future is a scary, but also exciting, thing to think about. I feel lucky to have been given the opportunity to take this course where exploring our education and our future was the whole point. I feel as though I learned a lot during the duration of this course, but I haven’t really had the opportunity to put it into practice yet which is why I am glad this paper was assigned. It gives me the opportunity to really explore my future in ways I haven’t done so yet. In order to really see how this course has affected me, I must first look back at old assignments to see how I have changed since the beginning of this course and during the duration of this course.…

Percy Bysshe Shelley was born on August 4, 1792 in Horsham, England. He is the first of seven children of Sir Timothy Shelley and his wife Elizabeth Pilfold Shelley. When Percy was 12 he enrolled at Eton College which was a boys' boarding school. He was bullied by his classmates for his eccentric ways and dainty appearance. When Shelley turned 18 he enrolled at Oxford University. He was uninterested toward his studies and barely attended class. Percy instead spent his time writing a novel called Zastrozzi, in which he vented his early atheistic worldview.…

During the late 18th century arose the movement of Romanticism. Ideas emphasized during this period was poetry, art, imagination, and emotions over reasoning. This proceeded the Enlightenment era which began earlier in that century. The focuses of these two eras were different but I believe both were important to the development of the world and not just to Western societies. Since the Romantics followed Enlightenment, philosophers critiqued areas and concepts from the previous age to prove that their present conclusions were ultimately true or at least credible. The whole point of the Enlightenment period was the promotion of human progress by reasoning and science rather than religion or tradition. Important influencers of this age were…

There are many metaphors for change. I had been challenged one time at my church gathering to view change as a journey, from one place to another. It is easier to focus on where the journey started, and finally where it ended and forget any lessons learned while travelling. I have often heard it said, “When one door closes, another one opens”. What they don’t tell you, is that between the closed door and the open one is a long dark hallway. I think whether in an organization or in my personal life, change can feel like stumbling around in the dark. The familiar is left behind, and we venture into the unfamiliar. I believe the biggest challenge is not getting lost on this journey, and to keep moving forward.…
