Shaw Concussions: Movie Analysis

Concussions while playing football has been under the microscope for a while now, the players that are wanting compensation for these concussion incidents are saying the concussions have caused neurological impairments and multiple other fatal diagnoses such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS and even death. One of the lead plaintiffs in this class action against the NFL was Kevin Turner, who died at the age of forty-six. Turner was diagnosed with ALS six years before he died, it turned out that the diagnoses was wrong. Researchers at Boston University have found that Turner spent the last few years of his life with a severe case of football related chronic traumatic encephalopathy also known as CTE. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy causes a motor neuron disease that’s comparable to ALS.
The face of the entire case is an ex player named
In two thousand sixteen a movie was released to inform the world about concussions. Will Smith was the main character in the movie called “Concussion”, this movie exploded and opened everyone's eyes around the world about the severity of concussions. In a three judge decision the third circuit affirmed the class certification for the former NFL players suffering from various diseases caused by repeated head injuries and concussions, they also affirmed the uncapped settlement reached between the National Football League and the class representative Shawn Wooden.
“Under the concussion settlement, former players diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease could receive as much as $3.5 million each, while players with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis could receive as much as $5 million each. However, while former players who already have died of CTE will receive $4 million each, the deal excludes those who pass away after a cutoff date, leaving those with no other qualifying conditions
