Ted Narracott is an old farmer with a wife and a son called Albert. In his farm, there are sheep, a few beef cattle, pigs and a mare. One day, Ted buys a foal and his family calls the horse Joey. From the beginning Ted and Joey don’t like each other: Ted is scared of untamed Joey and Joey is also afraid of Albert’s father who is often drunken and rough.
So Ted makes his son train Joey and they become more closed. Unfortunately, Ted has to sell the foal to the army because he needs money for his farm. In this nonfiction book based in the years of World War 2, the tragedy that happened to Finny during a summer at Devon set the topic for the story about the novel. During a summer at Devon Finny’s best friend, Gene, who is thoughtful and intelligent and had also developed a love-hate relationship with Finny, made a decision that would end in the death of Finny. They day when Leper, Gene, and Finny were all jumping off a tree at the Devon River there was a serious accident. When Gene and Finny were on a branch in the tree Gene spasmodically decided to shake the branch in order for Finny for all off, although Gene would never admit this to be true. Finny broken his leg and was practically crippled. This “accident” came to be the main aspect of A Separate Peace. Directly after the accident Brinker was interested in what actually happened that day at the river since it was accepted that Finny just fell off. One day when Gene was alone in his form room Brinker and his friends forced Gene down to the butt room, a room where smoking was allowed. Brinker further investigated that day during the summer by interrogating Gene. Gene felt uncomfortable so he fled. As he returned to his room he saw a very familiar face, it belonged to Finny. Finny had returned from resting at his house after the accident. Life went on and Finny continued to be the leader he was born to be, he instigated a snow ball war and school carnival.…

The backdrop of World War II in A Separate Peace emphasizes the microcosmic war that is occurring in Devon. Military language that is used emphasizes the parallelism of the actual war and Gene’s war throughout the novel. Man’s destructive actions portray man’s inhumanity to man; eradication and killings of the war depict how cruel man can be. Finny’s inability to cope with the cruelty of this world causes him to become oblivious to what’s actually happening. Gene’s constant hatred and envy leads him to loose himself in Finny. He characterizes Finny to have no flaws and believes, “There was no harm in envying your best friend a little” (25). This little envy grew to the extent where Gene had no control of his action and destroyed his best friend’s future.…

Gene Forrester is the main character in the deeply moving novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles. The book starts out with Gene as an adult looking back at his time spent as a teenager at Devon. Gene is a really smart, un-athletic kid who is best friends with a kid named Finny who seems to get away with everything. Gene is the smart kid, and Finny is the athletic kid that everyone loves including the teachers. Throughout the novel Gene looks back to the tree where he shook Finny off and he broke his leg. If Finny were to narrate this story it would be from a sense anger and confusion, not a sense of guilt and shame like Gene.…

Cormac McCarthy gives his story All the Pretty Horses an unique organization. The book only has four chapters within, yet each chapter is lengthy. There are also very few flashbacks in this story. This flashback was needed, however, to show how things did not change after John Grady Cole’s grandfather died. “On the wall opposite above the sideboard was an oilpainting of horses. . . . his grandfather looked up from his plate at the painting,” shows the painting being there while his grandfather was alive and is stirs up John Grady’s memory of it. There was also one dream sequence in the novel. “That night he dreamt of horses in a field on a high plain . . . they ran in that resonance which is the world itself and which cannot be spoken but only praised,” implies how the horses are wild and…

In the book, A Separate Peace, the author, John Knowles, writes to us a novel about war, but happens to focus more on the war within the human heart. This novel tells a story of two boys’ co-dependency during World War Two, and explores the difficulties with understanding the self during adolescence. Identity is complicated enough as the narrator, Gene Forrester, enters adulthood in a time of war, but a difficult friendship with a fellow student and rival leads to a further confusion of identity. Early in the book, the boys’ relationship is charged by Gene’s jealousy and hate of Phineas’ leadership. However, after Phineas falls from the tree, Gene ejects his darker feelings from himself and turns their relationship in a new direction where co-dependency, instead of envy, drives it. The central relationship between…

In the novel All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy, the author shows how important the roles of the horses are in the story and how they relate to John Grady, the protagonist of the novel. The horse has played an important role in the development of America. It has been a form of transportation, easy muscle, and companionship. In the Wild West, it was an essential resource for a cowboy to do his daily chores. McCarthy describes horses as spiritual and as resembling the human soul; meaning that horses came in many different forms. Horses are pretty, ugly, wild, tame, etc. in the story, they have so many different descriptions and different types of personality that they appear to resemble humans. In the story, John Grady is able to communicate with horses beyond a level normal people could. He could look into a horse 's eyes and be able to see into its heart; because of this distinct relationship Grady is able to compare the world of horses to the world of humans. Throughout the novel, he learns that what he thinks of men and about his romantic idea of living in the world is completely false and wrong. Therefore, McCarthy 's title shows that life can be full of change; and, at times, it can be cruel and ironic. Because of this, McCarthy 's title shows how much a perspective can change when a man goes on an adventure and experiences things he did not experience before. Meaning that, McCarthy wanted readers to think before they read the book that life is pretty and easy, but after they read the book he wants the readers to know that life is not always how it seems.…

As summer turns to winter and Finny comes back to Devon there are a lot of things going on all around Gene. With snow covered fields and ice covered rivers there isn’t much to do other than work. As Gene works on the railroads clearing snow out of the way for trains, a train of soldiers goes past, igniting a larger fire in Gene and Brinker, a fellow classmate and friend.who convinces Gene to enlist with him. As Gene is returning to his dorm, he discovers Finny is back at school. One morning as Gene and Finny awake and Finny is complaining about no maids yet again because of the war, Brinker comes to carry out his plans to enlist with Gene. Finny talks sense into them and they both decide against enlisting. Finally the war begins to settle in their minds and the winter becomes more bearable. “ For the war was no longer eroding the peaceful summertime stillness I had prized so much at Devon, and although the playing fields were crusted under a foot of congealed snow and the river was now a hard grey-white line of ice between gaught trees, peace had come back to Devon for me (Knowles 109).” Now that the war was no longer the main concern, Gene was now able to find peace in the winter, as he had in the summer. Due to the war’s frightening and poignant nature, moments of peace become more meaningful. Peace is important because, like the eye of a storm, it provides a tranquil and unperturbed moment allowing for regroupment before the storm (in this case the war) sweeps you up again. Later as the jaws of war begin its second bite and people are getting swallowed up, Gene finds it more and more difficult to find…

I found your response very enjoyable. I agree with you in saying that Mary Bibb faced many biases due to her race and sex and support your statement in saying that “one’s identity should not restrict or deny them from any opportunities.” I thought it was important that you addressed the issue of separation and exclusion, as the society was disregarding her accomplishments and making her seem invaluable due to her skin tone, sex and gender. Black children were also excluded/denied access to common schools and Mary Bibb wanted to change this, making sure that children of any skin colour could receive an education. Even though schools now accept students of various cultures/backgrounds/races, I find that within the classroom and schools, judgement,…
