People differ in substantial ways in their abilities and desires to engage in expressive controls. People concerned with their expressive self-presentation often closely monitor their audience in order to ensure appropriate public appearances.Self-monitoring is a theory that deals with the phenomena of expressive controls.It is important to not become a chameleon to maintain a sense of authenticity across contexts. An individual may have strong religious beliefs but is a high self-monitor and will only express his or her beliefs in church. The individual can also have strong religious beliefs but is a low self-monitor and will express his or her beliefs at church, home, work, and in social settings.
