Self Discovery In Looking For Alaska
The novel “Looking for Alaska” written by John Green is predominately about self discovery. I found this novel was filled with overwhelming emotions that connected and allured me deeper as the novel carried on.
I think the theme adolescence this novel portrays is very relevant to todays world because young teenagers are all going through a intimidating and perplexing time and this book relates to the way they feel and see the world in a way they can understand and relate to.

Protagonist Miles’ is pursuing a “great perhaps.” Justification of why he left home to Culver creak boarding school. “I go to seek a great perhaps” is a phrase from Francois Rabelais’ last words, which for the entire novel sets the tone.
Awaiting at Culver creak was Alaska Young, who is on her own escape from “this

Yet I personally think that Miles found his great perhaps within himself. It would have taken a lot of courage to go to boarding school, make new friends, face difficulties, commit and to eventually love Alaska.

I think Miles’ journey of hurtful rejection, deep self discovering and devoted loving was not the only concept I believe John Green had portrayed out of the novel. I feel It’s also a great search of why people act the way they do. Every person in this world has a motivation and their own great perhaps to pursue throughout their entire lives, wether they know it or not.

I feel that Alaska failed to see the big picture, which ultimately turned to the end of her search for death. I think she had become so intimidated by the “labyrinth of suffering” starting with the guilt of her own mothers death, that she decided to give up. Miles could only grasp this truth after her death: “that there's no point in being "terrified into paralysis" by one's

Throughout the book, Miles “Pudge” Halter’s love interest and friend, Alaska Young displays hints that she may possibly have depression and suicidal thoughts. Although the other characters in the book regard her as confident and adventurous, this is merely a side of her that she shows. The other side of her is mysterious and complex, the side that she wants to hide away from her friends. The first hint about Alaska’s depression is when she said, “Y’all smoke to enjoy it, I smoke to die (29)”, and although it may be a joke, Alaska’s dismal behavior continues to occur throughout the duration of the book. On page 27, she says to Miles, "You never get me. That's the whole point", which may indicate that she indeed doesn’t want anyone to fully…

The New York Times best seller “Navigating Early”,by Clare Vanderpool, is a story of wonder and following the stars. While relying heavily on the stars and constellations, it also relies on the immense development of its characters. The novel follows tennagers Jack Baker and Early Auden on Early’s quest to find Pi. As Jack is dragged along on this seemingly pointless adventure, it makes him think and better understand his life. Ever since his mother died, he and his father had been very disconnected and this journey through the Appalachian Mountains makes him realize that he should try to understand his father and get along with him. As Jack struggles to come to terms with his mother’s death and his father’s aloofness, Early also has his own…

I strongly recommend this novel to any teenager or adult who likes realistic fiction novels about life-long experiences and finding ones-self. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer relates to the world the journey of the young and adventurous Chris McCandless. Chris was an intelligent, albeit arrogant, man who separated himself from society and travelled into the Alaskan wild to, in the words of Chris himself, “kill the false being within”. He persevered through months of the wilderness, but soon found himself trapped and starving. Chris eventually died there and was found shortly after, quickly generating publicity. Many people who knew him and even more who did not gave young McCandless their sympathy, although some argue he is undeserving of it.…
