Seals: A Short Story
Today happened to be a cloudy, overcast day with an air temperature of six degrees Celsius and the water a few degrees warmer. The day held the promise of a winter storm approaching well before nightfall. The surf’s rough, but nothing a raft of Selkies or seals couldn’t handle. Now the local Selkie clan would meet the three male Leopard seal out in the ocean in their non-humanoid form. The Leopard seal shifters differ vastly from the Selkies. Selkies required their fur pelt to take on their Selkie form, without their pelt, cannot change into seals. Whereas, the Leopard seal shifter is able to alter by will alone. It’s handier to be a shifter when traveling abroad, far easier than explaining why you would have a seal skin in your carry-on. …show more content…
It pleased Duncan Adaira felt the same way he did in regards to captive animals. “Besides being beautiful and smart, she has a kind heart. Her friend Megan is also a bonnie lass and animal lover who didnae want to see animals in cages.” Torin told his friend. “That’s how you spent yer evening with Adaira friend? Talking?” asked Duncan. “Not all of us Selkie’s are ruled by our cocks with only one thing on our mind like you, my friend. Aye, we talked aboot many things, she mentioned she may visit Scotland when Adaira sister gets married. I’m looking forward to the possibility of getting to know her better,” he said with a grin on his face. While Duncan and Torin were deep in their discussion of females, Ryland took the opportunity to rise from beneath the women as they sat on their surfboards. Rising from the deep he brushed against Adaira and bumped her board as his large body broke the surface of the water. Hearing the clunk of a hard object hitting Adaira’s board had Duncan swiveling his head to see the Leopard shifter surfacing at the nose of the surfboard which about unseated her. “I think your seals are a tad too friendly Aileana,” Adaira said as grabbed the rails to keep her …show more content…
“Well this isn’t New Zealand Dare, I’m sure he just lost his way.” “You can’t believe that. The whole point I’m making is if New Zealand is not their normal territory, what would the scientist say about a Leopard seal in the North Sea off Scotland?” Adaira gave her sister the look as if to say why am I having to explain this to you, you should be aware of this in your job as a magazine journalist. “Did ye hear what the lass said? She plans to report the Leopard seal. We can’t have that happen. Duncan since ye know the lass ye need to take care of this situation. I will talk with Aileana on this matter,” said Kendrick. “What did ye want me to say to the lass?” “Whatever it takes to stop her from contacting the scientists in New Zealand. And what the hell is with ye challenging Ryland, ye know he’s looking for a mate,” Remarked

According to the NOAA website, the Hawaiian Monk Seal is one of the most endangered marine animals in the world. They are found only in Hawaii and have a population that has been on a steady decline since the 1950’s (about 4% per year.) Work has been done recently to being their numbers up. Bloody Ice Analysis

“Bloody Ice” is an essay arguing against the mass slaughter of Harp Seals. The author reveals the legal limits for the amount of seals allowed to be killed each year as stated by the U.S. Seal Protection Act and pleads for the further reduction of those limits. The passage argues that the inevitable extinction of the animals and the inhumane methods by which they are killed are cause for severe regulations on seal hunting. In the conclusion of the paper, it is suggested that ranching the seals would reduce impact on seal population and cut down dependency on the seal industry. The essay starts off well, but generally lacks in persuasively arguing its point and is therefore ineffective as a whole.…

Seal clubbing is an event that takes place in right off of the Atlantic Ocean in Canada. “The hunt usually opens in March in the “Gulf” areas around the Magdalen Islands and Prince Edward Island. The main hunt on the so-called “front” usually begins in April off the east coast of Newfoundland. Its pretty much over by May.” During this hunt the sealers are aloud to kill three different types of seals, the harp seal, the hooded seal, and the grey seal. The only restriction is with the harp seal. When they are first born harp seals are born with white coats. During this time they are off limits to the killing. Although, this protection does not last long, after around 12 to 14 days of age they lose their white coats and their only protection from being brutally murdered. At this point in time they are fair game to the hunter.…
