Global warming
• Global warming:
Refers to the recent and ongoing rise in global average temperature near Earth's surface.
» Is caused mostly by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
» Is causing climate change.
»

• Climate change:
» Refers to any significant change in the measures of climate lasting for an extended period of time.
» Includes major changes in temperature, precipitation, or wind patterns, among other effects, that occur over several decades or longer

Global warming
Earth Temperature
• Planet Earth maintains a relatively even steady temperature due to its atmosphere.
• Earth’s atmosphere produces a natural greenhouse effect to insulate Earth from temperature swings.
• Without the natural greenhouse effect, the Earth's average temperature would be much colder, and the planet would be covered with ice.
– The greenhouse effect that protects us can also be dangerous if we cause it to grow too strong.

Global warming
Earth Temperature
• The Earth's average temperature has increased about 1 degree Fahrenheit during the 20th century.
• Small changes in temperature correspond to enormous changes in the environment.
• At the end of the last ice age, the Northeast United States was covered by more than
3,000 feet of ice. The average temperatures were only 5 to 9 degrees cooler than today.

Global warming
Earth’s Atmosphere Gases:

Nitrogen (N)
Oxygen (O2)
Argon (Ar)
Water Vapor (H2O)
Carbon Monoxide (CO2)

Global warming
Greenhouse Gases Effects
Natural greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are the substances that trap heat and insulate Earth from temperature swings:

Water vapor (H2O)
Carbon dioxide (CO2)
Methane (CH4)
Nitrous oxide (N2O)
Ozone (O3)

Global warming
Human activity intensified the growth of greenhouse gases:
1.

Fossil fuel use is the primary source of carbon dioxide:
C7H16+11O2 = 7CO2+8H2O
2.

An important issue affecting the world today is climate change due to the increase in the amount of greenhouse gases that is released into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are gases that accumulate in the atmosphere due to human activity and the earth's natural biological and chemical processes. The four major greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide , methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2011). The main contributing factor to climate change is the abundance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Due to the burning of fossil fuels, solid waste, trees, and other chemical reactions carbon dioxide is absorbed into the atmosphere enhancing the greenhouse effect.…

Benjamin Sinclair Johnson is a former Canadian sprinter born in Falmouth, Jamaica. During the 1980’s he held a high-profile career, but following the 1987 World Championships in Athletics and the 1988 Summer Olympics he was stripped of all his medals due to doping. It has been suggested that all of the runners in that 1988 Summer Olympics were all on steroids, they just knew how to conceal it better. He not only embarrassed Canada as a whole but himself for the rest of his life, I’m sure he looks back on the day he decided to take steroids and regrets it entirely. Was this the right thing to do, he most likely asks himself, when we talk about ethics in sports that’s the real question.…

The earliest visible lesion of atherosclerosis is the fatty streak, which is due to an accumulation of lipid-laden foam cells in the intimal layer of the artery. With time, the fatty streak evolves into a fibrous plaque, the hallmark of established atherosclerosis. Ultimately the lesion may evolve to contain large amounts of lipid; if it becomes unstable, denudation of overlying endothelium, or plaque rupture, may result in thrombotic occlusion of the overlying artery.…

Dennis Kwok had been with Mazda Electronics for twelve years, rising from a junior quality control technician to vice president, operations. He had seen the company grow as a manufacturer of monitor screens used in electrocardiometers. In 2001, Mazda produced and sold about 200,000 units of its current model, the ME1001, at an average price of $150 per unit. The firm operates on a net margin of 5 percent and is in a marginal tax bracket of 50 percent. A few months ago, Dennis met with Jackie Brown (V.P., marketing) and her marketing research group. Jackie indicated that a recently incorporated medical group was interested in installing 1 million electrocardiogram monitors over the next five years if the screens and frames could be supplied at an all-in-cost of $100 per unit. Dennis shared this news with Larry McDonald in the engineering R&D department. Larry called back with some exciting news. Engineering was confident that a new model under development, the ME2001, would meet the buying firm’s specifications and could be manufactured at a variable production cost of $65 per unit provided it could use a special plastic frame designed by Burton Plastics, Inc. Burton had approached Mazda’s engineers with a prototype of a 9-inch supertough frame coated with a special chemical that made the frame more elegant and economical. Burton could manufacture 20,000 such frames per month, starting within three months, and offered a price of $30 per unit F.O.B. Mazda’s plant, provided Mazda agreed to use the new frames exclusively for the next five years. This price of $30 per unit was incorporated in the $65 per unit variable cost estimate by engineering for the ME2001. The firm’s cost accountant, Dirk Hageman, estimated that if 200,000 units of the ME2001 were sold, the allocation for fixed general, administrative, and marketing expenses of $4 million per annum would add approximately $20 to the cost per unit. This was based on the assumption that the ME1001…

This case is of particular interest to me because it deals with an abnormality in the Chinese culture. This abnormality is the defying behavior of Yong Li (Account Manager) towards Charles Tang (Manager of Marketing programs and Yong Li’s boss). According to the case, Chinese organizational structures are more vertically oriented than organizational structures in the west. This implies that employees in Chinese firms have less freedom and basically obey orders from “above” without question. However, this wasn’t Li’s case, who strongly defied Tang’s authority when Tang decided to shut down his project.…

Maurice Felix Charles Allais was a French economist and a proud recipient of Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics. He was conferred this honor for his commendable contribution to the theory of markets and efficient utilization of resources. He was the first French citizen to receive the Nobel Prize. Allais showed that his insights could be applied efficiently to set prices for state owned monopolies of which France had many. Allais didn't get credit as early as his English contemporaries did as he primarily wrote in English and not French. As said by Paul Samuelson, a noted economist, "Had Allais' work been in English, a generation of economic theory would have taken a different course". Allais also helped resolve issues regarding monetarism, which is the quantity theory of money and the utility theory. Besides his avid interest in economics, Maurice Allais had a great interest for physics and he performed experiments in gravitation, special relativity, and electromagnetism and discovered the Allais effect.…
