School Ma Ams As Hobbyists Analysis
Chapter four, “School Ma’ams as Lobbyists”, from the book Teacher Wars by Goldstein, discusses the difficulties from the late 1800’s that fell as burdens on teachers which inspired the fight for teacher unions. The schoolboard and officials discriminated against female teachers by freezing their pay in attempts to get rid of them. Margaret Haley, a feminist and teacher fought against male oppressors. Throughout that journey, more problems concerning teachers as a whole became more prominent. For example, the outdated teaching practices that discouraged students from continuing their education, lack of supplies in classrooms, and the overwhelming grasp of the school board on the teachers. Towards teachers and women, Margaret Haley did an outstanding job at securing their position by winning tenure and even winning the right to vote for females in Illinois. Knowing very well that getting a higher education is our best chance at escaping the vicious cycle of poverty, and creating a better future for ourselves, she discouraged that path. This continues to happen all over the country. Schools, counselors, and teachers limit the options of certain students. It is seen today, by eliminating the programs that make learning fun, and engage students, which pushes “trouble” students to drop out of school. Other times it is more direct, and educators push those students towards vocational jobs. There has to be more individuals in schools that attempt to eliminate the systematic racism and oppression that remains alive in our schools, by being that individual that inspires students to go

    A couple of challenges that Martha Bernal faced as she was getting her education stretched from family to race and sex. She was told by her father that her job as a woman was to stay home and care for the children and husband, she was able to convince her father, though, that she was doing the right thing, he soon supported her, but it wasn't his ideal idea. She was never motivated at school to take complex classes which made her believe this was the reason women do not move on with their education, this only made Bernal work even harder for her education.
