Scent Sock
We scheduled an appointment with the head of Piedmont Henry Hospital Women's Healthcare, Susan Oswalt, and we drafted an idea of we want to help the premature babies but did not know how. Miss. Oswalt proceeded with a tour of the neonatal unit of the hospital where we meet two of the nurses and got a chance to actually see the premature babies. After speaking with the nurses we found that the hospital mainly needed the “scent-socks” more than any other item. Though many premature babies have access to incubators, we see that they only help 80% of the time. The other 20% of the babies need the skin to skin contact with a parent. It has been scientifically proven that premature babies health improve when they are in the presence of the parent. …show more content…
To create the socks, we gathered and purchased the materials needed that are safe for the preemie babies such as hypoallergenic fiberfill and non-flammable baby socks. With those materials we started our first prototype of how we wanted to make the scent-socks. At we just did a simple oval shape to see how the doll would turn out. We then tried to take it up a notch and change a simple oval to a bunny rabbit. Along with the help of one of our teachers we decided to change the look of the dolls to represent a miniature life-like baby, a companion for the incubated baby. After finding the final look of the scent sock we began creating them in majority.
To help involve our community in our project we hosted a preemie session, in which speakers from Piedmont Henry Hospital spoke to the 11th and 12th grade young ladies at Stockbridge High School educating them about the reality of premature babies and how the majority of the premature births are from teenage pregnancies. After we hosted various Sock-o-Thons in which students and teachers volunteered to help create the scent socks as a whole, through this we created over 200 scent socks. Which we have donated to the Piedmont Henry Hospital

I am honored to be considered among the superior academic students at MCC and to be applying to the National Honor Society. If I am accepted into the National Honor Society, a service obligation that I would like to propose is collecting items for the babies and mothers in the Genesis House here in Melbourne. The Genesis House is a donation run organization that not only helps pregnant mothers, but also mothers who have newborns or young toddlers. I feel that this project would make an impact on many people’s lives. Most people in our world today believe that people in the Genesis House of Melbourne are fine because they have the volunteers there to support and care for them which sadly, isn’t always the case.…

    Job Shadowing an Ob Nurse

As a senior, I had the opportunity to job shadow an OB nurse at. During my time in the baby/mother area of Carilion Hospital, I experienced the admission process and discharge process of patients. I observed both mother patients and baby patients being assessed for vitals and given vaccinations. After each assessment was done, I observed my mentor as she put the information into the hospital date base program called “EPIC”. I observed 2 babies getting their hearing screened. I was also able to observe the tasks of a baby photographer, a nutritionist, and a brief consultation with a lactation educator. My mentor allowed me to listen to two heart beats of different babies; one with a murmur, the other without. I helped with simple tasks such as retrieving ice water and drinks and preparing a bed for a patient. My mentor showed me how to analyze the abundance of data on the main computer screen. This computer screen showed information such as what type of delivery was preformed (C-section or vaginal delivery), how the baby is to be fed (i.e. breastfeeding, formula), where the baby is being kept (NICU or nursery), etc. I witnessed a baby’s first bath, which can only be given after the baby is has a stable temperature. For this reason, most babies in the NICU will not have their first bath until weeks or months after they have been born. One thing that is not common that I had the opportunity to see was a patient with a nasogastric intubation (aspiration). The reason for her having this was because she had an abundance of fluids in her stomach, even after she had delivered her baby, and these fluids were not draining. Although I did not get to observe this next condition first hand due to the baby being placed in the NICU, I was informed that there was a baby born with gastroschisis. Gastroschisis is a disorder in which the baby is born with part of its intestines outside of its body, via the umbilical cord. My mentor described this…

Invisible children’s club is an in-school organization focused on devoting its services to provide relief and build homes for disadvantaged children and people of Eastern Africa. This club is focused on bringing together students in order to make a positive impact on the world. I love this club very much because it is so committed to helping people. During the school year every year we think of new ways to raise money for our cause. Just recently this year we had a pet wash at our local pet store and asked people to come by with any donation, big or small. The event took place on a cold and drizzly Saturday morning. Everyone was hungry, tired, and freezing but that never stopped us from staying and washing the animals that came by. My best…

I fulfilled my volunteer hours by packaging red hats for babies and making hats for the NIQU babies at Methodist hospital. I fulfilled these hours at La Bien. During both experiences, making and packaging the hats was quit relaxing because I was able to get away from studying and homework for a little while. I packed about 50 red hats and I made five hats that included a ninja turtle, a crown, and a butterfly. The hats will help keep the baby warm, and the hats provide the babies with an article of clothing. The American red heart society donates the red hats to make awareness of heart disease, the most common birth defect in the country.…

There is a chance the premature baby will be born with underdeveloped lungs and as a result, the lungs will not be capable of working on their own. At that point, the baby would need to be put on a respirator until their lungs are strong enough to work on their own. Even after being taken off the respirator and leaving the hospital, the baby will be at high risk of having breathing problems throughout their entire life. These babies are also more vulnerable to asthma and are at higher risk of SIDS.…

When you have a premature baby there is a lot of stress, as well as a lot to do when your baby is first born premature. Your baby will be in the hospital at least until his/ her due date. Your baby will most likely be on an IV for most if not all of his/her time in the hospital. Your baby might also have to be on oxygen depending on the circumstances. Your baby may have many different things that may need to be taken care of depending on the child: how early the baby is/ how strong the baby is/ how much the baby weighs. Also feeding is most always an issue with premature babies.…
