Santiago Hero
Is Santiago Heroic? What is a hero? A hero is defined as, “a person who is admired or idealized” (Google). When thinking of the word “hero” mostly to everyone, a superhero comes to mind. Not all heroes are superheros. To me, a hero is someone who is courageous and never gives up no matter the circumstances. Speaking of someone heroic, Santiago is an old fisherman in The Old Man and The Sea written by Ernest Hemingway. Although Hemingway did not exactly state that Santiago is a hero, he displays that he is with the many characteristics he gives him. By the end of the book, readers can see that Santiago seems heroic in many ways because of his determination and persistence. Santiago can be viewed as a hero from one of his many characteristics, determination. Santiago suffered eighty four long days without catching a single fish, but continued to stay determined and not give up. Santiago stated “Fish”, “I’ll stay with you until I am dead” (Hemingway 52) which shows that he was not going to give up on catching the fish until he or the fish was dead. Santiago portrays his heroic characteristic of determination through the duration of his fishing trip. Another heroic characteristic Santiago shares along with determination is …show more content…
Some people argue the Santiago is not a hero because heroes help people and that Santiago was only benefiting himself with catching fish to feed his poor self. On the contrary, Santiago was a very helpful person and fisherman. Without Santiago, Manolin would not know the things he knows today. Santiago taught him everything he knew about fishing from the time he was a very young boy until now. Furthermore, by Santiago never giving up on catching fish it taught Manolin a valuable life lesson to never give up on what he really wants. There is a counterclaim to whether Santiago is a hero or not, but the strong rebuttal can back up that Santiago definitely is a hero in most

To point of ignoring others and being gone for days just to complete their goal, and sometimes rejecting help from others. Those three things can change how a person acts. When that person reaches their goal, they either realize what they’re doing and see it as crazy or stop right before their goal and see if it’s worth it. For Santiago, he went out far in the sea to catch a fish to gain respect from the other fishermen. Only, when he caught the fish to only lose it to sharks, he realized that he didn’t really need to do that. Manolin was there for him, helping him out even when he didn’t need it. What is a hero? A hero to me is a person who is brave, has a bunch of courage and knows right from wrong. You don’t have to have a mask or a suit to be a hero. A hero is willing to help a person at anytime. A hero can kill their enemy with kindness. For an example I believe Jackie Robinson is an incredible, life changing hero. He had been the first African American to play in the Major League Baseball. He had played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. They played him and they had ended racial segregation.…

Adding onto the fact that he had to defend himself from the sharks without as much as a moment’s rest and with severely limited supplies. Finally, his friendship with Manolin and his personal connection with the Blue Marlin urged him on throughout the entire journey. Thinking of the Marlin as a brother and Manolin as the youth he must pass his legacy down to, Santiago could not allow himself to give up so easily. Thoughout the short story, Santiago constantly and prominently displays his examples of Courage, friendship and endurance. Though others may not think otherwise, these three values…

Santiago has the Devata value of a great fisherman, he had the literal skill to catch the fish, but also the knowledge necessary to catch the great marlin. Another thing on his side, is his pride. Although he is very old, he still has strength. He is so commited to catching a big fish to prove his worth to society, but by doing so, in his mind he has ruined both the great marlin and himself. He also knows the sea, and its ways, very well. The way Hemingway portrays the sea in this book, it is almost like a lens that we see Santiago through. Santiago has been on the sea forever, it has soaked him full of knowledge and experience, and he almost feels ones with the sea. Santiago sees it as a higher being, something that he has learned from since he was young. As an example, when he is holding onto the line of the fish that is pulling him so far out into the sea, he merely turns back to see the lights of Havana and knows where he must be, and where he must go to get back. While he is out far until the gulf,…

Santiago was a physically strong man, but he was even stronger mentally. His mind knew all that he did and kept him from surrendering. When his body was on the verge of giving in to the fish, his mind would not allow it. He thought of the great DiMaggio and he asked himself, "Do you believe the great DiMaggio would stay with a fish as long as I will stay with this one? he thought. I am sure he would . . . " (68) And to give him more confidence and the will to go on, he thought of the arm wrestling match in the Casablanca tavern. He remembered how, "For a long time after that everyone had called him The Champion." (70) This flashback gave him strength, which his mind used the best it could to bring the fish…
