National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has created a guideline for the care of adults that are in their last days of life. This was done by doing an analysis of a lot of different research articles on this topic and complying a list of recommendations that healthcare providers should follow and incorporate into their practice. There will also be a brief mention of some nursing research that can be developed from this guideline, and how this can be use in the clinical practice setting in the future.

One of the three critical recommendations from the guideline is recognizing when a person may be in the last days of life; which specifically refers to assessing the patient that is dying for any change in sign and symptoms like Cheyne-Stokes breathing or fatigue and loss of appetite. The next one is communication, with this recommendation you want to make sure that the patient that is dying and their loved ones are provided with accurate information about the condition, how the condition will be managed and allow them the opportunity to ask questions about their care and to express any fears and anxiety. The last recommendation is pharmacological interventions with this recommendation you need to be aware that not everyone will experience pain in their last days of life but if they do experience any pain it needs to be addressed quickly and effectively and reversible adverse reactions caused by the pain needs to be
