In places like the hospital there can be very demanding and challenging jobs which I love because I feel as if I get to see another side to me. This gave me an opportunity to help younger children and to be a role model for them to look up to. During the duration of this project I spent time with the children and wrote up an assessment about them at the end of the day. This allowed me to voice my own opinion. The mentoring project involved me playing with them sitting down and colouring with them. I picked up excellent skills here that will be a useful contribution and will equip me well for a fantastic career in child nursing. I helped hold an old folks part in Christmas. I helped plan where everyone sat, planned the entertainment and helped serve the food. This made a massive improvement on my communication skills. This opportunity allowed me to converse with people who are not so able. I have also done some voluntary work in the summer. I worked at a local charity shop called Barnados. Barnados believes in the potential of every child and young person. Working here boosted my organisational skills and team working skills. I believe this will help me in nursing because I will have to take part in multidisciplinary teams. I look forward to using all these skills in my future

While researching texts written and published about Nurse Practitioners, I have found that Nurse Practitioners are rapidly becoming the top health partner choice for many Americans. Nurse Practitioners have been servicing patients for over forty years. The NP role had its initiation in the mid-sixties in response to a lack of physicians in the United States. They can perform very extensive and concentrated examinations; distinguish and treat common keen illnesses, as well as laboratory tests; and educate and instruct patients and their loved ones about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and possible health care options. In all fifty states Nurse Practitioners are allowed to prescribe medications to patients, including controlled substances. Only twenty-six states allow Nurse…

For the longest time, I have known that I want to be a Nurse Practitioner. As a young kid I, would play doctor and take care of my siblings or toys and just look after them, it was not until I was in High School when I actually discovered what I wanted to do as a career. I started volunteering at our hospital Marian Regional Medical Center, where my eyes opened to the idea of actually working in the healthcare industry. My time volunteering I had acquired some knowledge of what a Registered Nurse did, I volunteered on the ICU and CCU (Intensive Care Unit, and Critical Care Unit), Med Serg., Emergency Room, Wellness and Rehabilitation Center, and Labor and Delivery floor; where I would do little task like change linen sheets, complete and make…

For example I was given the role of a leader to ensure that students were using the correct method on the mannequin. When we were given the task to stitch up the cut, I guided them; making sure that they all had clean hands and cleaned the injured area with antiseptic wipes before stitching. I was also able to enhance team-working skills as it was vital during this time. My communication skills also developed as I had to explain the methods clearly. This was a rewarding opportunity and gave me an insight into the work of a…

I love to learn because I want to provide the most competent care that I can, and because of my mere fascination with medicine. Recently, I was a preceptor for a student nurse. He was the husband of a patient I had taken care of a few times. The first time was during a miscarriage, this was a devastating end to their many fertility treatments. We all spent hours talking and crying through this hospital stay. The next time I took care of them was a much happier visit; she was in labor. Everything was going wonderfully until there was a drop in the fetal heart rate. Upon examination, I discovered that there was a prolapsed cord. Feeling the incredibly slow pulse of the cord on my hand during the entire cesarean section was one of the scariest moments of my life. The outcome was great. They had a thriving baby boy. Five years later, his father is almost done with nursing school, and he was telling me that I am one of the reasons he is becoming a nurse. This was a pivotal moment in my career; it was when I realized the immensity in which I can impact lives. I want to continue to do this, and as a Nurse Practitioner I will dedicate my life to helping those in…
