Same Rhine Genetics Update Conference After the conference, I learn that quantitative human traits are easily quantify because of the continuous distribution in a population. Some example are height, weight, blood glucose level and common disease which are model by a bell shaped curve where most people falls in the average region. In the flipping pennies model, polygenes are addictive or cumulative and reassortment is the mixing of genes and genetic material from parents into new combinations of genes in their offspring. Polygenes reassert every generation yielding thousands of new and unique possibilities. I also discover that in human genetics, there are variants meaning millions of differences among individuals in a population. One type of variants is the Single Nucleotide Polymorphism or SNPs which is found in greater than 1% of the population. Another variants is Copy Number Polymorphisms or CNPs also found in greater than 1% of the population. This mean that we all technically 99.6% identical in our DNA sequence and only .4% is where we are different cause by the variants. I really enjoy listening to Professor Rhine lecture and it kind of makes me want to go into the field of genetic. The one thing I would love to share with someone else about what I learned is the pluripotent stem cells in therapeutic cloning. These cells can give rise to all cells in the body with the exception of the embryo. This means that they can potentially treat diseases in any body organs or tissue by replacing damaged and dysfunctional cells. This is great advantage to this type of therapy because the risk of immunological rejection is alleviated because the patient’s own genetic material is

    Due to recent discoveries, stem cell research will have many future medical possibilities. A recent stem cell breakthrough shows that cloning human organs or body parts to treat patients with injured organs or limb deficiencies could be possible. “The cloning techniques can also be used to grow organs for patients with a failing liver or kidney.” Because the newly cloned organ will be genetically identical to the one being replaced, rather than a donated one, the chances of it being rejected will be very low. Ultimately, this opens up many possibilities of curing patients with injuries, amputations, and failing organs. Stem cell research also reveals the ability to cure diseases. “Researcher Dieter Egli said their work was inspired by the thought of being able to take stem cells from embryos and use them to treat and even cure diseases. Worn out hearts could be patched up, aged brains could be rejuvenated and diabetics could be freed from the need to take insulin, all thanks to stem cells.” Stem cell researchers believe it is possible to cure diseases by replacing old organs with newly cloned ones. This will impact future medical possibilities because newer treatments will be out there and the ability to cure diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer may be possible.     Few recent scientific issues have stimulated so much media attention, public debate and government involvement as that of stem cell research. Stem cells offer people hope by promising to greatly extend the number and range of patients who could benefit from transplants, and to provide novel therapies to treat debilitating diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson's, Huntington's, heart disease and stroke, as well as accidental damage such as spinal cord injury. So why would anyone object to research in this area? The problem is simply that a particular type of stem cell, which potentially could provide many cell types for a wide range of therapeutic uses, is obtained from the very early embryo.     The embryonic stem cells, which are pluripotent cells that are derived from the inner cell mass of the pre-implantation embryo at the blastocyst stage. They are considered as an important finding as they have the potential of self-renewal and differentiate indefinitely into the three germ layers, the endoderm, mesoderm and the ectoderm. The human embryonic stem cells were considered to be useful in clinical applications, as they have the potential to be used in cell therapies on diseases like Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and spinal cord injury. However, this research faced a huge ethical difficulty in the use of human embryos, especially in some conservative countries and the religious issue. Also there was the problem on tissue rejection from the transplantation to the patients. In 2006, Yamanaka and his colleagues had discovered that differentiated cells could be reprogrammed back to an embryonic-state like by combining several transcriptional factors. They were able to generate what is now called the induced pluripotent stem cells from either mouse embryonic or the adult fibroblast cultures, which demonstrated huge similarities to embryonic stem cells, such as the morphology and growth properties. The induced-pluripotent stem cells could have do the same job as embryonic stem cells, while avoiding the ethical issues and tissue rejection as they were made from the patient’s own cell.
