The Past and Present We all have things we don 't talk about we call them secrets. Secrets can do a lot to a person. Keeping secrets with friends can be fun and or helpful when you need to confide in someone. However secrets can sometimes do more harm than good. They can live inside you and cause endless guilt and pain. In Sam Shepard’s Buried Child is a case where a family of hard work, loyalty, strong family values and morals is turned into complete hatred, regret and sin due to a deep dark family secret. Psychology Today states that “Deciding not to reveal a hurtful secret is usually easy, while deciding to reveal it is hard. But if it 's a secret you 're withholding from someone with whom you have an intimate relationship with if it need never come up, it still represents a barrier, a schism, between you and that person”( Lickerman 1). You some kinda social worker?”(Shepard 90). Having to hide this secret Dodge is always having to be on his toes not being able to live comfortably or have any kind of …show more content…
Dodge, Halie, Tilden and Bradley are all have this pain and disappointment in each other. They were all hurt so badly that they want to hurt other people just to spread it around to make other people just as miserable as they are. Television character Meredith Grey once said that “It’s one of those things people say. ‘You can’t move on until you let go of the past.’ Letting go is the easy part, it’s the moving on that’s painful. So sometimes we fight it, trying to keep things the same. Things can’t stay the same though. At some point you just have to let it go. Move on. Because no matter how painful it is, it’s the only way we grow” (Grey). The family has no desire in facing the truth because they know pain of facing the truth won’t be easy however; the pain of trying to ignore it ultimately ruins

“Our past is what molds us into the person we are today. It does not define us”. The author of The Body of Christopher Creed, Carol Plum-Ucci showed that some people have to hide who they truly are to protect themselves or others. She proved that people shouldn't hide from their true self, because being someone else will only bring pain and regret in the end. It shouldn't matter what they have done in the past, people should learn to forgive and…

Many people lead a happy life with secrets, which they feel that if exposed, they will be disgraced to the society, to their friends and family. When people are in this situation, they lose hope in themselves. Khaled Hosseini shows through The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns that whatever happens there is always a second chance that fate gives you to make up for what you have done in the past. Hosseini shows that when family secrets are revealed it will lead to abashment, and results in suffering, humiliation, and pain. In order not to lose hope you have to fight, or forgive. This hopeful message of Khaled Hosseini in The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns is that although family secrets lead to shame and suffering, the only way to right past wrongs is through forgiveness that leads to redemption.…

Griffin argues that everyone in society is a part of a larger matrix; that if we had been born to a different family, in a different time period, or to a different world, we would not be the same people we are today. Throughout her essay, Griffin ties together four seemingly separate people through their fears and secrets. Secrets are very powerful, in that just one secret can impact the lives of many, even if the person keeping the secret has no intentions of hurting anybody or changing the lives of others. While on the other hand, some people keep secrets to protect themselves and do not mind the pain it causes others. No matter how big the secret is, all secrets have penalties and consequences.…

The truth tears people apart, and more often than not it’s better that people don’t hear the full story. The novel, The Great Gatsby, outlines this point extraordinarily well. The first, and most powerful example from this novel, involves Wilson, the broken owner of a run-down auto shop. Wilson's life came to a crashing halt when he discovered Myrtle, his wife, is having an affair. He immediately decides to skip town with Myrtle to escape the corruption of the east. He went from being a decently happy man, to a man who had his ego crushed, and his confidence ruined. Interestingly, nothing changed at all regarding the reality of Wilson’s life. Myrtle was always having the affair, and Wilson was always ridiculed by her. In fact, only Wilson's view of reality has changed; his ignorance toward Myrtle's secret life no longer tricked him. Wilson’s ignorance protected him, and showed him the world he would have rather lived in. If he would have remained ignorant, not only would he have remained happy, but Myrtle would never have ran into the street at all. Simple knowledge destroyed Wilson’s life, and ultimately ended it. This goes to show that people can not always handle reality in its purest form. There will always be something someone would rather have not known. So, just like Wilson, we live our lives partially ignorant to, and partially ignoring, the fact that reality, in its truest form, will tarnish even the boldest of…
