Saint Chosen: Saint Barbara

Summary:

Saint Barbara lived in Nicomedia and was the daughter of Dioscorus who prisoned her in a high tower in order to preserve her from the outside world and also due to her “disobedience.” While imprisoned her studies led her to secretly become a Christian. Before leaving on a journey, he intended to make a private bath-house for her which intended to have two windows, but instead Barbara made them put three windows, as a symbol of the Holy Trinity. Dioscorus ordered that she was to be killed when he discovered she was Christian. He first tortured her but miracles kept on healing and saving her, but unfortunately in the end he managed to kill her by beheading. However, as a punishment he was struck dead by lightening.

What did Saint Barbara do in order to become a Saint?

She was tortured and eventually beheaded by her own father in the year 235 for refusing to abandon her Christian faith. Dying for ones beliefs in Christ is usually considered as an automatic sainthood for the martyr.

Reason for choosing Saint Barbara to be my Confirmation Saint:

Saint Barbara is someone who I continuously look up to whom practiced the Christian faith. She has always been considered my family’s favorite saint. Her story inspires me to be a better person and to be true to what I believe in despite what others say. I am amazed at the amount of courage, will, and bravery she had, and I really hope I have courage like that someday. Her story gives me a vivid reminder that their can be anger in our lives but we can control this by being in touch with God’s presence and continue to look up and pray to him no matter what. Also, due to my cultural background, my family firmly believes she was a great saint and therefore we have great devotion and celebrate her feast day, December 4th, annually which we don’t do to any other saints, making me further familiar with her life and background. Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first born American to be canonized in the Roman Catholic Church. Although this is not why I chose her to be my confirmation saint, she is the patroness of in-law problems, widows, and the death of parents. Elizabeth Ann Seton had to go through many losses in her lifetime including the death of her mother and sister at age three, her stepmother when her father and she got divorced, and her husband when he died of tuberculosis (Catholic Online). Elizabeth had a very good bond with her step mother and when she and her father got divorced, she abandoned Elizabeth. She wanted nothing to do with her. This made Elizabeth feel depressed and alone. She went on to marry William Magee Seton when she was 19 years old. He eventually died of tuberculosis, leaving Elizabeth a widow at age 29. She started a religious order that went on to spread throughout the country. This is what she is most known for. Then on January 4, 1821, Elizabeth Ann Seton died of tuberculosis at age 46. She was very charming, cultured, and brave. Because of all the suffering she went through, she taught many people how to pray. On September 14,…

As part of my confirmation, I will take a saints name. This saint becomes the heavenly patron that I will set as my role model. My sponsor has been my "role model" throughout this process, but as I begin my Catholic life St. Elizabeth Ann will be my guide. I chose Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton because for the past 3 years I have been part of her team for my old school St. Joseph. At St. Joseph we have this saint system. When you first enter 6th grade you are put into one of the first 5 American saints teams, and I was chosen into Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s, but not only that she is a great catholic that someday I hope to become.…

She was able to explain her life and the way she lived it according to her beliefs. Those journals became her legacy and the directions for living a saintly life for so many who came after her. “This is a reminder to all of us who feel we can do nothing, that it is the little things that keep God's kingdom growing” (St. Therese of Lisieux).…

Throughout the history of Christianity, there have been many documents displaying stories of martyrs. The word ‘martyrdom’ is derived from the Greek martyrein, meaning ‘to bear witness’. In Christian understanding this has meant witnessing to Christ and to the Christian faith, even under pain of death at the hands of others. Most of these reports show martyrs as men, who demonstrate courage and honor in the face of those challenging their commitment to their faith. The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicity expresses the account of two female Christian martyrs in 203 A.D. and their personal reflections in reaction to their oppression. Perpetua’s memoir reveals an insight unto her life and how these two model—in the mist of persecution—striving towards freedom against their family blood and male oppressors. Gender roles have played a huge role in society as far back as written history goes. Perpetua was not confined by how she was supposed to act as a woman and took a traditionally masculine role in several situations. Perpetua did not value her femininity as strength, rather she shed it and deliberately masculinized herself to be strong; upholding the false idea that the only way to be heroic is to be like a man. This story reflects about beliefs of the early church in correlation with the experience of a female martyr and provides insight into how the male-dominated culture of that time biasedly interpreted the actions of courageous Christian women merely as characteristic of men: Women can take on a masculine role for the sake of God to the point where they “become men” in the eyes of Christianity.…
