SWOT Analysis: Flowers Strengths
Q4 - OE_Strengths
What do you see as Flowers’ particular strengths?
"I think their product line is a strength. They have a very diverse product line. They seem to have gone the way of trying to get into the organic markets as well. They are getting a little bit more involved with not just ‘plain old bread’ like they used to be. So I think they are trying to adapt and appeal to a broader audience, I would guess."
Q5 - OE_Weaknesses
What do you see as Flowers’ particular weaknesses?
"As a shareholder of the company, one of the things I am troubled about is we have seen the law suits regarding the truckers, the delivery people, and how they are trying to be considered sub-contractors, I guess or independent contractors. I don’t think they have

"Grupo Bimbo. They get lumped in with staples companies. When I wanted to figure out if we wanted to buy the stock or not, we looked at other staples companies, so Pepsi and Coca-Cola, even though they are a different products, it kind of fits into that product sector."
Q15
Why do you prefer this over other capital deployment options?
"Repurchase shares. At this point I prefer this to other initiatives because they can increase their earnings per share and they can do some bolt on acquisitions, bit I don’t want them to do a large acquisition. And paying down debt doesn’t make a lot of sense, assuming they have a low cost of debt right now. So I like buy backs better because they can increase their earnings per share just by reducing the float out there, the number of shares outstanding, even if revenues stay the same."
Q16
In your view, what can Flowers do to drive shareholder value over the next 12-24 months?
"Well, they could increase earnings per share - they can have some top line growth. But they could also increase the dividend. They could increase the buy backs. I think it is important that they do a combination of things, not just one

The typical advantage of a share buyback is that it increases earnings per share (EPS) since there are a fewer number of shares. The theory being that since EPS goes up, the stock price should as well. A buyback is also management’s way of telling the world that it believes that its stock is under-valued. It sends a signal that the company considers its shares undervalued, and it finds a use for some of that vast cash hoard many firms have. Companies could, of course, pay a dividend, but many prefer the flexibility of buybacks because they are occasional events (the issuance of a dividend usually creates an expectation of regular payouts) (Meyers, 2006).…

The organization that I have chosen to do my SWOT analysis on is the New Orleans Saints football team. They are among the most successful teams of this decade but not ranked very high as far as most lucrative organizations in the National Football League. They are currently ranked 23rd among the 30 active teams in the national football league. The organization was formed and became a professional football team in 1967. The team got its nickname due to its founding being on All Saints Day on November 1, 1967. The team initially one of the weaker franchises in the league. It didn’t win many games and struggled to sell out games. They have won one Super Bowl title, 5 Division Championships, and made only 9 playoff appearances in its 46 year existence. The ultimate goal of this organization is to win football games and generate revenue by selling tickets and merchandise.…

The significance of the trend analyses on net sales and net income is that PepsiCo has been steadily increasing its sales over the past 5 years (for a total increase of $9 billion), since 2001. Clearly, they must have sound marketing and advertising strategies, in order to not just maintain their sales figures, but to maintain a growing increase each year. Up until 2005, they were performing equally admirably at increasing their net income as well. While their net income for 2005 is still an impressive 69.9% higher than in 2001, they went from 3 years of massive increases, to a slight decrease. Since the sales figures increased from 2004-2005, it’s not a question of having a “sales slump”. This means they must have increased expenses dramatically during 2005. We know this because net income is tabulated from the income statement, which consists of revenues and expenses. Logically, if sales have continued to increase, yet net income has fallen slightly, then there must have been a substantial…

    Calyx & Corolla

The traditional distribution chain for the fresh flower market is: grower, distributor, wholesaler, retailer and finally the consumer. As a result of the number of participants in this structure, a flower may be as much as seven to ten days old before it is available for sale in a retail store. Additionally, the industry participants do not confine themselves to a single role. For example, most growers distribute some flowers directly to local or more distant wholesalers, and many distributors and wholesalers engage in some of their own production. The fragmentation within the channels of distribution results in a rather inefficient distribution system. This gap in the fresh flower market structure was noticed by Ruth Owades who capitalized by creating Calyx & Corolla (C&C), which is a true departure from traditional channels of distribution. The business model of C&C is as follows: orders from customers are received by telephone, fax, or mail at the central office in San Francisco and then sent via fax or computer to the thirty flower growers who supply C&C. The growers, in turn, pack and ship individual orders and send them directly to consumers by Federal Express. As a result, C&C is able to substantially reduce the time it takes to deliver flowers to the consumer's door, typically only a few days after the flowers have been cut.…
