The Strategy of Ryanair
The managers of the Ryanair chose discovering the opportunities in the market. Evaluating all the facts, Ryanair chose low cost strategy which was quite successful decision. By using cost advantage strategy, the firm tries to maintaining lower cost (C) at the same time achieving willingness to purchase for customers (B) that is comparable to their competitors. The Ryanair had low costs compared to the competitors due to some reasons. To begin with, they were late movers which mean that they benefited from the experiences of the other competitors which in turn decreased their R&D costs. Ryanair evaluated their operations and saw that there is an opportunity to schedule the flight from Dublin to London. This line was quite profitable due to some reasons. First of all, there was stable demand on this line for 10 years. Secondly, the fact that only 60-70 % of the flights of the other two companies was full most probably due to high ticket prices. Thirdly, three quarters of a million of people, who can be called as potential customers, were not using the airline industry for that road because the prices were high. Instead, they were using the railway or sea ferries.
Additionally, they chose to fly between secondary airports of the big cities which in turn results in low fees that paid to airports. Moreover, the brothers established the company with their father’s money which also decreased their costs because they did not pay any interest rate. They also used small plains for the beginning which decreased operation and maintenance costs.
All in all, by choosing cost advantage strategy Ryanair charged single price for the tickets which was 98. They also tried to give first rate customer service. The price of ticket was quite low than the competitors. By having quite low, they were able to attract not only the customers who were using competitors’ plains, but also the ones who chose the rail or sea transport.

    RyanAir stands out as it is the only low-cost carrier among the airlines examined. The strengths of this LCC compared to the “legacy carriers” such as Delta, United, and American is that the company serves only relatively short-haul routes throughout Europe which cost cheaper to operate and generally are not a huge loss in case of non-full flights.     Ryanair chose to enter the market at a time when the consumer base needed a low cost alternative and the airline industry was being deregulated. At the time, there was a large segment of the European population, over 750,000 people, who were traveling from Dublin to London via rail and sea ferries instead of air. Ryanair assumed that if these customers had a more economical option, they would likely choose to take a flight and cut the time of their trip by 8 hours.     There were a lot of problems that Ryanair had to face throughout a year; dealing with these problems led them to have a bad name within the press and media. As Ryanair entered the second half of 2007, fuel prices, compensation to passengers, terrorism and security, industrial relations and safety issues were big challenges. Ryanair’s motto was “we guarantee out customers no fuel surcharges, not today, not tomorrow, and not ever.” This began to cause a major problem when the fuel prices throughout the economy began to rise. Ryanair’s fuel costs represented 35 percent of operating costs in 2006, compared to 27 percent in 2005. Although, they promised their customers they would not be charged for rising fuel costs, the airline found themselves paying an absurd amount for barrels of oil. They paid $70 a barrel up to October 2006 and $73 to $74 dollars a barrel up to March of 2007. When it came to compensation to passengers, Ryanair’s compensation costs amounted to 200 million dollars annually. Not only were they fighting fuel prices but they were handing out money left and right to customers for cancellations of flights, meals, refreshments and hotel compensation. With September 11 terrorist attacks Ryanair had to cancel 279 flights in the days after the incident and had to refund 2.7 million dollars in fares to 40,000 passengers. With this, the lost 1.9 million dollars in reduced bookings, another downfall to the 9/11 attacks were increased insurance costs for all the commercial airlines, which meant that the ticket fares had to be increased so they did not suffer anymore financial loss.
