Rough Draft: Skin Cancer Summer vacation is on its way, what’s the first think you all think about when you are on summer vacation, bathing suit, beach, tanning, and hanging out with friends? I certainly hope not. The first thing everyone in this room should be thinking about is where is the sunscreen. Have you ever wonder what exactly causes skin cancer? Many people suffer from skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in American. About half of the people here in this room will eventually get it if you don’t take precautions. Many people these days are not taking skin cancer seriously after knowing its significance. Skin cancer has been a growing problem

    The use of sun protection has become a much more common topic of conversation among the general population over the last decade. This can be attributed to several different factors. In some instances, environmental concerns over depleting ozone and higher levels of radiation penetration are the cause. Another important reason is that well over half of all new cancers in the United States are skin cancers (Capelle, 2006, pg. 1). Ultra-violet (UV) light is the cause of these cancers. There are several types of UV light. According to Gonzaga sunlight is made up of a broad spectrum of light. This spectrum is divided by wavelength in UV light. There are three types of UV light; UVA, UVB, and UVC (Gonzaga, 2009, 19). UVC is almost completely absorbed by the ozone. UVA and UVB are the two types of UV light that penetrate and affect people. UVA penetrates deeper into the skin and can cause immediate darkening of pigments, there is increasing thought that UVA may have more to do with photodamage than thought previously (Gonzaga, 2009, 21). UVB light ranges from 290 mm to 320 mm and is carcinogenic. It does not penetrate as deeply into the skin as UVA, however it has several acute effects including…

Out of these people, 7,000 lose their lives from it (Raji). 7% of the American population is considered vitamin D deficient. Other studies have proven that 3,000- 4,000 people are benefited from the tanning beds’ vitamin D (Dr. Mercola). This is because higher level beds, such as level 5’s expose more UVB light, which is less powerful to the skin, then the UVA light, which penetrates deeper into the body. 12 out of 20 people use lotions during their tanning session. Unlike the 12 people who use lotions, the other 8 are more likely to encounter sunburns along with a higher percentage rate of skin cancer. Out of the 2.3 million tanners a year, only 832,000 prefer using the spray tan, which develops a sunless tan.     Hochman tells the story of a pediatrician named Jessica Lilley, who had developed malignant melanoma after years of using tanning beds. She did not realize the impact of using tanning beds until later on in her life when she was diagnosed with skin cancer. It is noted that "five to 10 minutes (depending on the equipment) in a tanning bed is roughly equivalent to a half-hour in the sun on a mid-July afternoon"(Hochman). This is a great comparison because it shows how much stronger tanning beds can be. Tanning beds are a huge risk, especially to those who are of a young age. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, "Nearly 70 percent of tanning salon patrons are Caucasian girls and women primarily between the ages of 16 and 29, and of the 28 million people who tan indoors every year, 2.3 million are teenagers." Similar to Jessica Lilley's experience, I also have a history of skin cancer. It is extremely important for me to prevent sunburn at all costs. Personally, getting sunburn on my back mutated the cells in a few of my moles, resulting in me needing to get them removed. I regularly visit the dermatologist to keep track of my moles. If a mole changes in shape, color, or size, it is highly recommended that the mole is biopsied and tested for cancer. It is very easy to develop skin cancer if the skin is not protected under harsh UV rays; thus, it is super important for people to regularly check their skin and protect it from the sun.
