Katia’s arranged marriage indicates that she was dominated by her parents, dominantly her father due to her gender. Males and females genders have clear representations in the Italian community; males are treated as dominant species in a relationship. They make decisions and also they play as the main role in a relationship. Conversely Women’s on the other hand are treated as subservient and they do a minor role in a relationship. Consequently Katia was not treated well by Francesco; she did not have a say about the migration, she was not allowed to learn English or to integrate with Australians, katia was forbidden to have any contact with her daughter after her pregnancy. This exemplifies the authority an Italian male can exert on the women in his family. It was not until Francesca’s death that Nona could be reunited with her daughter and granddaughter; this represents discrimination by Francesco as he descends from a patriarchal society. Male gender is represented as been the decision maker, ruler and the controller in a marriage by the Italian community. Women had to accept that men dominated relationships and to accept the marginalization and the discrimination. Katia was expected to look after the house where Francesco had to work, a stereotypical Italian family. (Quote: “My job was to make a home for us; his job was to make the…

First of all, I think it is important to note that the two poems discussed in this journal are either addressed to or written concerning white, prominent, men who have had some hand in dealing with slavery in America. Although I don’t know the “William” she is referring to in the first poem, it seems, through her poem and his title, that he had a great deal of power and the ability to make some political change. Washington, on the other hand, is more of an obvious example, given that he was one of the Founding Fathers of America. He supported the Constitution which states that all men are created equal, even though he himself was a slave owner.…

While different ages are momentous in the United States, when a person turns twenty-one it seems as if the person is definitely ready to enter the real world. A twenty-one year old step’s into the real world of grownups, accounting, and a legal drinking limit. A twenty first birthday is very special, as is someone’s sixteenth and eighteenth birthday. Both poems by Samuel Johnson and A.E. Housman demonstrate a person turning twenty-one, but both poems demonstrate different views on how the speaker and the audience feel. “To Sir John Lade, on His Coming of Age” is about the speaker telling his audience on how he feels about finally turning twenty-one. “When I Was One-and-Twenty” describes a young adult listening to an elder or someone they look up too about their new age. Both of these poems have a condescending or rude tone while they either talk or listen to the advice that they are given.…
