Mercutio's death is the first of many deaths in the Play. Capulet's servant gave Romeo the party invitation list. Romeo saw Rosalyn's name on the list. He went to the party to see her and Tybalt saw him. Tybalt couldn't do anything about him being there. Tybalt being mad fought Mercutio and stepped in to try to stop it. Tybalt couldn't see because of Romeo and Tybalt stabbed Mercutio.
Romeo's banishment was caused by him killing Tybalt. Tybalt was mad about Romeo going to the Capulet party. Tybalt confronted Mercutio and when Romeo tried to stop the fight Mercutio was stabbed and died. Romeo was very mad at Tybalt for killing his best friend. Romeo kills Tybalt for killing Mercutio and the Prince banishes him.
Romeo being banished caused him to not know that Juliet's death was fake. Romeo was mad at Tybalt for killing Mercutio so he killed Tybalt. The prince banished him for killing Tybalt. Juliet was sad about Romeo being banished so she and Friar Laurence made a plan. Friar Laurence's friend Friar John couldn't deliver the message telling Romeo about the plan because of the Black Death. Therefore Romeo left thinking Juliet was really dead. He went to the tomb and killed himself.
Romeo being dead caused Juliet to kill herself when she woke up. Tybalt was killed by Romeo. Juliet's dad wanted to make her feel better so he made the wedding for the next day. She drinks the potion as planned by her and the friar. Romeo doesn't learn of the plan because Friar John couldn't get it to him. Romeo goes to her tomb and kills himself. Juliet woke up and saw Romeo dead. She killed herself because she loved Romeo very much.
The plot of the story moving along is based on cause and effect. Mercutio's death is based on Romeo going to the party and Tybalt being mad. Romeo's banishment was based on him going to the party and the death of Mercutio and Tybalt. Romeo's death is based on his banishment and Friar John not delivering the message. Finally Juliet's death is based on Tybalt's death and Romeo not getting the message form Friar Laurence. Without these events there couldn't have been a happy ending.

Even though Mercutio was killed off and not talked of again, he was a vital character in aiding to the death of Romeo. Initially, Romeo was too despondent to do anything fun or interesting because Rosaline was not giving him what he wanted but Mercutio, after hearing about the Capulet party, was able to persuade Romeo into going to the party. Romeo fights and kills Tybalt just because Tybalt slays Mercutio, despite knowing the consequence of fighting -death- he still takes it upon himself as a way to seek repentance for Mercutio’s death. He is able to restrain himself before the death of Mercutio but after his death Romeo falls to his impulsiveness and fights Tybalt.
