Romeo & Juliet The Movie vs. William Shakespeare's Play
Scene Comparison
By: Ben Carleton

If you are wondering whether you should watch the new Romeo & Juliet movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio after you have read the play by William Shakespeare than you must read this! All you need to know regarding the difference in the main scenes is right here. The biggest differences in scenes were the death scene of Mercutio and Tybalt and the death scene of Romeo and Juliet. Another big difference in scenes is the Capulet party. Just as in the play, Romeo and Juliet both die in the Capulet tomb.

Although they both die in the Capulet tomb the Capulet tomb is not in the same area in the movie. In the movie the Capulet tomb is a giant tomb positioned in the middle of the city where as in the play it was a somewhat small tomb that is positioned in a cemetery. The biggest difference in the death scenes is that in the movie when Romeo enters the tomb Paris is not there. Because he is not there Romeo does not kill Paris in the tomb as in the play. Unlike in the play, in the movie when Juliet wakes up the Friar Lawrence is not there. Like in the play, Romeo and Juliet both die beside each other. But when Romeo kills himself he does not notice that Juliet is actually awake, in the movie. Also, after Juliet gains the strength to move she kills herself with Romeo's gun, not his knife. These two star-crossed lovers killed themselves over the love they had for each other, which only began a few days before at the Capulets party.

Unlike in the play, where it seems that Romeo had been intoxicated, he instead takes a tablet of ecstasy. When entering the party in the movie Romeo says " Thy drugs are quick". He is referring to the ecstasy tablet that was given to him by Mercuto. In the play he states this after he drinks the lethal potion in the tomb. Before going to the party Mercutio tells Romeo and friends the Queen Mab speech. He changes it in the movie by

The Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann reenactments of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet are wonderful and was and still is very famous for its use of words and the plot of the play itself. All though there are many differences between these two films there are many similarities to the reenactments. The characters from the films had many things in common the character were very funny with their acting and put emotions into their part. The plot line between the two films was very different but had many similarities, the plot was the same by the Montague and Capulet running into each other and then starting an argument leading to a conflict many moments later. The family feud is a strong and very hostile emotion between these two…

There are many obvious differences between these two films, the first one obviously being that the 1996 version is set in 1996 and is more modern, whilst the 1968 version stays true to the time period that the play was originally set in. But there are many differences then just the mere fact they are set in different times, and more similarities than the play itself.…

Do you believe in love at first sight? Well, Romeo and Juliet did after the Capulet party that Romeo (a Montague) snuck into. The Montague’s and Capulet’s have been fighting for ages but no one seems to know why. These two love birds are forbid to see each other but they cant resist. After the party Romeo sneaks back to see Juliet. There are two versions f this classic scene the modern version directed by Baz Buhrmann and the classic version directed by Franco Zeffirelli. They are both true to the story but have many differences that can make or break the story. I think the modern version is more compelling because it has more things that we have in present day which makes Shakespeare fun!…

During the scene when Romeo was going to talk to the Friar about getting married, the 1967 film left out the speech about the power of plants that was spoken by the Friar. That was one of the most important speeches in the whole script and film. Without it you didn't get the whole affect of the power of potions and poisons. Another major difference in the script is in the 1997 version. The nurse approaches Romeo to talk about the wedding arrangements and she isn't harassed for looking like a huge ship with a sail but as an old lady. Neither of the film versions had Paris at the Capulet tomb when Romeo arrives there to look at Juliets body. They completely left him out of the ending which left out a lot…

Paris and Romeo experience death, sadness, and love, because of their love for Juliet. Romeo and Paris both die for Juliet. Romeo dies for Juliet because he decides that life is not worth living without her. Paris dies because of his dedication for Juliet, so Romeo does not enter the tomb in which Juliet is lying. Paris and Romeo experience great amounts of sadness for similar because of their dedication to Juliet. If they had not loved her, neither would have been upset when she died. Also, Romeo would not have been sad when he had to leave for Mantua because he has to leave his wife behind. Both men demonstrate their love for Juliet differently. Paris takes the traditional route and goes and asks Lord Capulet for permission to marry Juliet, whilst Romeo secretly marries her. When everyone believes Juliet is dead, Romeo gives up everything, including his life, for his remaining love for Juliet. Paris however, only lays flowers on the tomb and prays, which is the common courtesy that would be expected of anyone. There are many similarities and differences between Paris and Romeo in how they die, grieve for, and love…

The Dicaprio version of Romeo and Juliet is more modern based. In the movie, instead of swords, they use guns instead. The settings are much more surprising and fun to see. This made the movie much more entertaining. These characters wear clothes that people nowadays wear too. They drive around in cars and there are even helicopter. Although they look like modern people to us, they still talk in a tone shake spear had intended them to sound like. The Montague’s look more like they’re a gang than they are a family. The Capulets look like they’re in the mafia because they’re wearing suits. The characters in the movie are much goofier compared to the book. Mercutio is much more playful, especially in the scene where he dresses up as a woman at…

The Capulets and the Montague's are so similar, in their social positions, both are lords, and are equally affluent. The play was written in the 17th century but was set in the 13th century. This scene fits into the play by being probably one of the most important scenes, as Mercutio is killed by a cheap shot; "an envious thrust." This was meant for Romeo and causes him to become emotionally involved. This leads to him killing Tybalt in a violent eruption of rage and emotion.…

The two versions of Romeo and Juliet I decided to watch were the 1968 film and 1998 film. While they share many similarities such as the script (most of it), they also have many differences such as the behavior of the characters and the way that the story is delivered. In the 1968 version, the Montagues are depicted as more timid where as the Capulets are the ones that are trying to start something. The Montagues are continually trying to leave the situation but the Capulets continue harassing them. In the 1998 version, the Montague’s are much more aggressive and are the first ones to draw. Despite engaging in a brawl, the Montagues quickly seem reluctant about their actions. This could suggest that the Capulets show a much stronger hate than the Montagues do. The characters Tybalt and Benvolio are also depicted similarly between the two films. In both films, Tybalt seems to be snobby and over confident about his skills. On the other hand, Benvolio seems weary whenever having to face Tybalt. The modern version provides a faster pace and the message of hate is demonstrated in a more extreme way such as the fire at the gas station. The modern version shows how quickly our society has become dangerous especially since the bystanders in the modern version are threatened and are not willing to take action. In the 1968 version, the bystanders took action and tried to break up the action. I believe the modern version is easier to understand because it is easier for us to relate to the more modern setting and dangers such as guns and gas station fires. In the second scene of the first…

“Romeo + Juliet” succeeds to convey Shakespeare 's play by the same name. The film was filmed in Verona, California set in the 1950s. The interesting part of the setting is that both Verona and Venice are cities in Italy and California. When talking about this movie, it 's easy to get lost in the memories of Shakespeare 's play and, while the majority of people will remember most scenes; I enjoy looking outside of the norm, something overlooked by the majority of people. A viewer who cannot see the similarities between the two versions than the art of re-creating plays is lost forever. But, as in Shakespeare 's play, both families the Montague 's and Capulet’s are rivals in both business and land. This movie allows the viewer to recognize the differences between the two families by the colors and styles of their owners dress. The parents are given first names, whereas in Shakespeare 's play they nearly went as Lord and Lady. Mercutio is neither a Montague nor a Capulet, but he gets murdered defending Romeo from Tybalt. In fact right before he dies he warns both Romeo and Tybalt at their families need to watch out.…

William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is a cherished piece of literature that has been remade into movies many times throughout history. The 1968 version and the controversial 1996 version give different perspectives of Shakespeare's famous play. While the 1968 classical version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet should be appreciated, the modern version portrays the complexity of love in a fast-paced society by using narrative and stylistic elements combined with energetic editing in an advanced, creative way.…

In Verona, Italy, the feud between the Montague and the Capulet families that has been around as long as anyone can remember, breaks out in a street brawl, and is broken up by the Prince of the city. Later that same day, two star-crossed lovers from each family, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, meet at the Capulet’s party and its love at first sight. After the party, Romeo goes into the Capulet’s garden and finds Juliet on her balcony thinking about him. After professing their love for each other, they plan to get married. The next day, they are secretly married by friar Laurence, with the assistance of Juliet’s maid. After the wedding, the two lovebirds plan to meet later and Romeo walks around the town. Soon a fight breaks out between Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, and Romeo’s best friend, Mercutio. Since Tybalt is Romeo’s new family, he chooses not to fight him until Mercutio is killed by Tybalt. Romeo, out of anger, kills Tybalt to avenge his best friend’s death. Romeo’s punishment for the murder is banishment instead of the death penalty. As this is happening, Juliet’s father, unaware of her marriage to Romeo, arranges for his daughter to marry Count Paris, whom Juliet doesn’t like. Juliet makes up a plan for her to take a potion to make her appear dead and while she is “buried” Friar Laurence informs Romeo of the hoax and then later her escape so they can live together secretly. Standing by to help Juliet out of her tomb, Friar Laurence sends friar john instead to deliver the news but Romeo’s servant sees Juliet dead and tells him before the details of the plan gets to Romeo. In desperation, Romeo goes to Juliet’s tomb to find her “dead” and not being able to stand to be alive while she isn’t, he kills himself. Moments after Romeo dies, Juliet wakes up to find him dead and also kills herself. The families then find their two children dead because of the feud and decide to have a joint funeral and live in peace forever and…
