Brockman Guitar Company is in the business of manufacturing top-quality, steel-string folk guitars. In recent years the company has experienced working capital problems resulting from the procurement of factory equipment, the unanticipated buildup of receivables and inventories, and the payoff of a balloon mortgage on a new manufacturing facility. The founder and president of the company, Barbara Brockman, has attempted to raise cash from various financial institutions, but to no avail because of the company’s poor performance in recent years. In particular, the company’s lead bank, First Financial, is especially concerned about Brockman’s inability to maintain a positive cash position. The commercial loan officer from First Financial told Barbara, “I can’t even consider your request for capital financing unless I see that your company is able to generate positive cash flows from operations.” Thinking about the banker’s comment, Barbara came up with what she believes is a good plan: With a more attractive statement of cash flows, the bank might be willing to provide long-term financing. To “window dress” cash flows, the company can sell its accounts receivables to factors and liquidate its raw materials inventories. These rather costly transactions would generate lots of cash. As the chief accountant for Brockman Guitar, it is your job to tell Barbara what you think of her plan. Answer the following questions.…

The role of a management team in any business or organization is fundamentally to establish goals and objectives, to create a business model and to ensure the company objectives are carried out according to that current business model. The culture of a company will be based on management – either current or previous. Many companies have a “them and us” culture between front line staff and management, however they still spend millions on bridging the gap through open forums and “share your thoughts” involvement days where staff give opinions on the workings of the company and how they believe the company should be run.…

In the past, managers were responsible for giving orders, making sure orders were followed, and hold people accountable if they didn’t comply. Nowadays, this has all changed and the job of the manager is no longer that of a watchdog, rather the new job of a manager is to shape a more supportive work environment and find ways to help each employee be more productive. With changes in demographics in today’s work force due to changes such as non-traditional families with single parents, and younger employees, employees ask management to be more considerate of their needs. In a new study that had been conducted called National Study of the Changing Workforce, results stated by those who were surveyed were that the most important considerations in deciding to take their current jobs were that the management provided their employees the ability for open communication, effect on personal/family life, and the nature of the work. These change expect managers to provide employees with a more caring supportive management style, and the willingness to forego other aspects of a job – including salary considerations – to get it. Employees that ask for open communication want management to make them more aware and knowledgeable about changes in the company such as information about company finances, new products, competitive practices and pending changes in policies. In addition, the role of management is also expected to have an effect on personal/family life by finding new ways that allow flexibility and autonomy in individual jobs. For example employees may say that why are employees asked to come to work at 8:30 am sharp and work a prescribed number of hours, shouldn’t it be more important for employees to be at 100% when they attend work? People believe that a bit of flexibility in hours can go a long way by assuring some piece of mind and better focus while at work. Furthermore, employees also ask managers to have a nature of…
