Road Accident
Road accident is a global tragedy with ever-raising trend. In Malaysia, it represents a major public problem because of the high number of victims involved and also the seriousness of the consequences for the victim themselves and to their families as well. Accidents are generally classified as single vehicle accidents in which the vehicle is either colliding with fixed objects or with pedestrians or the vehicle may fall in a ditch and multiple vehicle accidents in which two or more than two vehicle can either collide head–on, or one vehicle may collide with the front vehicle at the back or may a have side-swipe type collision. The increase of road accident is closely linked with the rapid growth of population, economics development, industrialization and motorization encountered by the country. It continues to be a growing concern to all those who uses the roads.
There are many causes of accident on the road. Lack of experience and licensing older drivers are the causes of escalating accident rate. Nowadays, people can obtain license easily. Actually, people who want to obtain the license must have an experience and know the rule on the road. However, we do not have a big number of experience drivers on the road. The inexperience drivers will give problems to other people and they can be the causes of accidents on the road. Beside that, the older drivers can be the causes of the escalating accident rate. For example, in the summer of 2003, 86-year-old George Russell Weller drove his car into a Santa Monica, California street market, killing 10 people and injuring numerous others. Weller, who appeared disoriented when he got out of his car, later told police that he had accidentally pressed on the accelerator instead of the brakes. As is usually the case when such accidents occur, politicians and public health officials began again to raise the issue of the regulation of older drivers.     Often times if one asks another what age group they think is the most dangerous drivers one would say teenagers. Lately there have been many reports claiming that these thoughts are no longer true and that elderly drivers are considered the most dangerous age group on the road. The Washington Post said that in the age group sixty- five and over have accounted for “sixteen percent of all traffic deaths and eight percent of the injured, but they accounted for thirteen percent of the population.” With statistics so high why is there no questions being asked about the ability the elderly have to drive. Research shows that the older one gets the worse their vision and hearing can get these are two key senses you need when driving. The loss of these two senses can be the difference between life and death on the road. Death rates for drivers begin to climb after age sixty-five, according to a recent study by Carnegie Mellon University. The elderly should have to prove to the Registry of Motor Vehicles that they are capable of driving by retesting, completing and passing a drivers education course, or putting an age limit on how old one can be until one they are considered no longer able to drive.…

    Elderly drivers are not only endangering others but also themselves by driving. The fatality rate for older people is nine times higher than that of younger individuals (Older Drivers). This fact alone should prevent the elderly from driving. Their frail bodies wont withstand as much as a younger person’s would. In 1995 seniors accounted for overall 13% of all traffic fatalities. This paper attempts to review the present status of road safety in Malaysia with special reference to road safety initiatives carried out by the Malaysian Government especially the Ministry of Works Malaysia. The contents of this paper will uses an overview of present road accident statistic, national road safety target, Road Safety Programmes by Ministry of Works Malaysia, and discussion of future strategies to reduce traffic accident.
