Greg Critser lives in Pasadena, California, and writes regularly for USA Today and the Los Angeles Times on issues of nutrition, health, and medicine. An authority on the subject of food politics, Critser has been interviewed by PBS and other media, and his writing on obesity earned him a James Beard nomination for best feature writing in 1999. Embarrassed by a passing motorist who shouted "Watch it, fatso," Critser went on a diet and lost forty pounds. In the process he discovered that in America, weight is a class issue—fat and poor often go together. In exposing the heavy truths about American obesity, Critser gives our bloated nation a wake-up call. His books include Fat Land: How Americans Became the Fattest People in the World (2003) and Generation Rx: How Prescription Drugs Are Altering American Lives, Minds, and Bodies (2005).…

    Birds And The Bees Speech

“The Birds and the Bees”, If you haven’t given “The talk” you’ve probably received it. I remember my mom bought me The Birds and the Bees book from a yard sale and I was mortified that I was supposed to be reading it. Naturally, I pretended to read the book for a week and then tried to hide it away in my attic. At age 11, I wasn’t exactly and expert at hiding things so it was just thrown onto an open shelf in my attic. Little did I except my 8 year old sister to be going into the attic for any reason; getting up there requires being able to reach the pull hook on the ceiling then climbing up the 45 degree angled ladder. I heard a screech from the attic, I ran up and to find my sister sitting there with a horrified look on her face as if she just witnessed a murder. I have a look of shock on my face while I’m bombarded with questions, “What the heck is this? Why do we have this book? Why is this so graphic? I think I might have gone blind! What is this?”. She never let’s me forget about how much I traumatized her. Talking to kids about the taboo topics of sex, racism, and…

    Of Mice And Men Speech

I overheard Ms. Migdall saying that you do not have enough money to teach both Of Mice and Men and To Kill A Mockingbird. I am writing to you to tell you that there should be no doubt in your minds that To Kill A Mockingbird is the book for your high school students to read. To start, To Kill A Mockingbird touches on many important social issues like racism and sexism and subtly convinces the reader that these are terrible things. To Kill A Mockingbird drew me in and coached me into wanting to fight against the double standards in the 1930’s. I found that while I was reading Of Mice and Men I was not being drawn in by the horrid circumstances, but instead by my dislike of the book.…

English is spoken as a native language by about 375 million people and as a second language by around 375 million speakers in the world. And according to research by the British Council, speakers of English as a second language will soon outnumber those who speak it as a first language. Philippines, for example, is also using English as its second language, and every year the number of fluent English speakers here is getting bigger and bigger, which I think is very beneficial for our country. Just imagine if all the Filipinos can speak in English correctly then we could be globally competitive.…
