'Rhetorical Analysis Of Is Google Making USupid'
The negative effects of technology are always very controversial; no one really knows how technology is going to affect us in the future. Google an internet giant, directs the user to any information he/she is looking for. The sole purpose of Google is to make knowledge accessible to everyone. On the other hand, many people believe that we are starting to rely heavily on Google. In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid” by Nicholas Carr, he states his fear of the Internet and explains how Google has already started to change his mind in the way he retains information. In a total different point of view, CEO Eric Schmidt states that Google is not to be feared and that it is here to help. Both of these articles are completely opposite of each other but Carrs’ argument is more effective than Erics’ presentation.

Although information is available by a click of a button, the internet is influencing both our mind and our reading habits, life without Internet is unthinkable, so much so that it has become a universal medium. Carr grabs the attention of the reader by stating a quote from a movie “2001: A Space Odyssey,” the final scene where Dave loses his mind (533). After that, Carr makes a connection of how the movie ends and how deep reading is a struggle due to the countless hours on the internet.
The purpose of Carr’s article is to inform his rhetorical audience about what he endures by the internet. After stating his argument that deep reading is a struggle Carr later provides personal examples to enhance his credibility. Carr argues that his peers and colleagues specially literary ones, have the same problem, even Scott Karp confesses that he stops reading books and does

    Carrs biggest concern is that the internet is taking away from “deep reading” (92)by making information easily accessible. Carr through emotion and words makes it seem as though it is unjust to not fully read and understand the material and only skim through points of inquiries, and also feels that by just skimming the material it is taking away from the full extent of knowledge available. Carr does not go on tangents ranting about his emotion instead he uses his emotion to drive his work. For example when Carr talks about how the founders of google want to create an artificial intelligence such as HAL, his response was filled with sarcasm and doubt leaving a sense of uncertainty.     Carr uses various allusions in order to give the reader a better understanding of technology today. He alluded to the movie called 2001: A Space Odyssey by referring to a supercomputer named HAL saying that its “mind is going” (225). Carr then began to say that he could also feel his mind going. He says that that he is “not thinking the way [he] used to think” because he can no longer easily read long articles or books (225). He explains that the reason for this change is the Internet. Information that used to take him “days” to obtain is now readily available to him (226). Society has become so reliant on technology to obtain their information, they no longer need to memorize or learn things because the information is a “few Google searches” away (226). Carr then tries to explain this opinion by adding an allusion to Maryanne Wolf’s Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain. Wolf explains that the reason humans no longer wish to take the time to read because we teach our minds to “translate symbolic characters we see into the language we understand” (228).     In the essay “Is Google Making Us Stupid? What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains,” the author Nicholas Carr argues that the Internet has detrimental effects by altering the way we comprehend and the way our brain functions. Carr’s mind is changing because he is not thinking the way he used to think. He used to love reading books and articles, but now he can barely get through two or three pages because his “concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages” (Carr 138). Reading a printed media has become a struggle since Carr is losing the ability to focus on deep thinking. He just skims through the text without actually thoroughly reading it.
