Rhetorical Analysis Of Art Education By Greek Wallace
Wallace illustrates his ideas by giving concrete examples and analogies to bring the concept closer to the audience’s minds. The idea that Wallace is trying to get across is that liberal art education is important to help students exert a sense of control over their thought process. He delves deeper into the meaning of critical thinking transcending the old, boring and cliché way of understanding it. According to Wallace, the critical thinking that you will gain from an art degree is simply your ability to choose what to think about when your mind is trying to drift you into an endless chain of passive and egocentric thoughts. The language used in his speech is poetic, descriptive, and thought provoking which draws the audience into the stories through imaginative engagement. …show more content…
He did not invoke any research studies, graphs, or data to build his argument. Nevertheless, he heavily relied on daily life examples that everyone can relate to and understand. For instance, he gave an extensive example about how the tedious routine of working adults could hijack our brains and shove us into a downward spiral of negativity and ego bloating, self-conversation. Wallace built on this to show us how a liberal art major can come into play by snapping us out of this unconscious train of thoughts to a differenttrain of thought, more critical and positive. The ability to direct our focus and choose what to think about are the real fruit of liberal art studies and critical thinking

    Starting off by reporting the first person point of view, he sketches how the typical American will venture through life performing the same tasks day in and day out. He describes how frustrating life is going to be constantly running the same dull cycle day after day. Impatiently waiting in an overcrowded checkout line, selfishly only thinking about how “important” it is for you to get home in a timely fashion. I can attest that we all have been there.     What do we mean by explore when we talk about doing so as a purpose for a writing piece? Tompkins is attempting to grab the readers hand and pull them through the doors of these museums. Conversation comes to mind when reading this essay. The author is giving the reader food for thought and we as readers are supposed to make up our own minds as to what we think about a picture, painting, sculpture, etc. This idea of answering questions brought to you by Doctor Tompkins is shown here in reference to a painting of a horse that appears to be bound in some cruel way, “His First Lesson. Whose? And what lesson, exactly? How to stand still when terrified? How not to break away when they come at you with strange instruments? How to be obedient? How to behave?” (Tompkins 415). To a person like me these questions are no more than wasted lines, however, to the intended audience these questions fuel the mind to continue to be engaged in the essay. What ruined my ability to read this essay with enthusiasm is specific to page 416 when she says, “They are imperialist and racist; they glorify war and the torture of killing animals,” (416).     When a work transcends into art, it surpasses its cultural restraints and touches us. We are moved; we are transported to a new place that is, nevertheless, strongly rooted in a physical experience, in our bodies. When we focus on works such as Van Gogh’s “Old Man in Sorrow” or Velazquez’s “Christ Crucified” rather than “The Scream” or “Campbell’s Soup Cans”, we become aware of a feeling that may not be unfamiliar to us but which we did not actively focus on before. Unlike popular culture, this transformative experience is what art is constantly seeking. The emotions invoked from a reading of Yeats or Frost pulls the strings of our conscience and heart and most importantly, they inspire and motivate us to change ourselves and/or the world around us.
