Abstract

The stroop effect causes interference within people when the color of a word and a word, the name of a color, are incongruently matched. We tested this phenomenon to see if our results would be held constant as reviewed by existing literature. Our experiment used different conditions which consisted of same, different, and mixed. With these conditions we were able to see that there was a statistical significance between the associations of words and colors when they are incongruent with each other as noted through the participant’s performance.

A phenomenon known as the stroop effect is a study that has been studied extensively in the field of psychology. This is a task that most students and other participants have a hard time completing flawlessly, despite the amount of times they may practice. The effect of this phenomenon was coined by the researcher who discovered it in 1935, John Ridley Stroop (MacLeod, 1991). J.R. Stroop was concerned on the effects of interference caused by words that are incongruent with their colors. According to MacLeod, interference is expressed as the difference between the times of naming colors that are not in sync with the words being presented. Following this incongruent task, researchers Sichel and Chandler (1969) found that congruent words aided the participants in their responses by shortening the time it took them to name all colors. This shows that there are some underlying cognitive processes that inhibit our ability to respond correctly to the task. There have been findings that the type of response people take, orally or manually, also has an affect whether interference occurs in the task or not (White, 1969). For example if someone was to give you a paper with names of colors and the colors weren’t the same as the word. They told you to read it aloud; you are probably going to have a hard time reading the words because of the effect.     On arrival, participants and the two observers entered the room and had the participant sit down in front of a desk. Participants received instructions orally and were asked if they had any questions before we continued with the experiment. The instructions listed each participant to name the shape of each item and avoid reading the word within the shape. Participants were asked to begin at the top left corner of the page and move left-to-right, row by row. In congruent shape trials, each shape matched the word within the shape. In incongruent shape trials, the shapes did not match the word within the shape. They were asked to repeat this task six times. Additionally, to control order effects, we counterbalanced the experiment by alternating trials for each condition. The condition that was tested first was the congruent trial, followed by the incongruent trial and it kept alternating in this manner. It was asked that participants should not hold the paper but were allowed to point at the paper on the table with their fingers. If participants felt stuck, they were instructed they may “skip” and move to the next shape. When the participant finished each task, the observer was to record the seconds it took for participant to finish naming the shapes.     | Three groups of Subjects studied word-word paired associates after receiving instructions to learn using either (a) overt rote repetition of the word pair, (b) construction of an interactive scene in imagery, or (e) imagery of the objects non interacting and separated in "imaginal space." The study trial was followed by a test for stimulus recognition and for PA recall given recognition. The procedure was repeated on three different lists of 30 PAs. All words were concrete nouns selected for high imagery. There were 90 pairs shown in three lists of 30, each pair was presented for 10 sec in the window of a memory drum. Followed by a test list of 60 words, the left-hand (“stimulus”) members of the 30 pairs of the study list scrambled in with 30 new concrete nouns (as “distractors or lures”). Each test word appeared for 10 see during which Subject (a) rated the likelihood that he had seen it on the prior study list by checking off a 5-point scale ranging over the values "Sure Old, Think Old, Don't know, Think New, Sure New," and (b) if Subjects thought the word had appeared in the prior list, he tried to recall the other word paired with it. It is clear that some processing activities become automatic as a result of prolonged practice eg. Typing, driving, etc. Automatic processes therefore are fast, require no attention and are unavoidable.     The Stroop Effect, often studied under the cognitive perspective, tests how these processes work. When James McKeen Cattell(1886) conducted his research and concluded that objects and colors took longer to name aloud than the corresponding words, he was aware of the conflict between automatic and controlled processing. Although Cattell had already drawn this conclusion, J. Ridley Stroop(1935) is widely known for his research with color and words, in that he was the first to have participants identify the ink color of words. Stroop used six colors and conducted separate experiments. In experiment-one, Stroop timed seventy college participants read colors in a list. List-one was a color written in black ink and list-two was a color written in contradictory ink, i.e., purple written in red ink. In experiment-two, Stroop used 24-point solid squares and had 100 college students name the colors of two lists of squares, while timing them. In his last experiment, Stroop replicated experiment-two with thirty-two college students, but used swastikas instead of squares. Stroop’s research differs from Cattell’s because Stroop was concerned with developing an understanding of interference.
