There is calm moment in the beginning it just hops right in the story. In fact the roller coaster analogy is great to describe how the book is written. There were times where my jaw hit the floor and there were also times where my stomach didn’t feel good by all the fascinating things that happened in the book. There are all kinds of twists and turns. And then when you just have figured the book out another turn pops right in the book. There were some shocking details in the book. Benson`s reactions were great enough to keep the reader on his side of view. Sometimes he was a little annoying but in the situation it was

Although at times it was hard to follow what was exactly happening in the book. I felt like the book jumped around a lot because each chapter was a different event that happened throughout the year. I didn’t know when the events occurred so at times it was confusing. In addition, the book was older so it was hard to make connections with the book and my everyday life.…

32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

Even in times of worry, you must try to stay calm and think rationally. The characters Michael Northrop created are no different. Trapped in a school, they try to stay calm. The audience are not the only ones worried. In the story “Trapped,” narration is used at the end of every chapter (through Scotty’s thoughts) to build suspense, represent how the characters think, and to show how the characters feel about what will happen next.…

The biggest thing I noticed from this book is the character development. This book is based on the character Gunnar Kaufman's life, so of course character development is needed since everyone changes drastically from elementary school to adulthood. Beatty, though, almost turns that development into an art form. Every event that happens to Gunnar adds to his personality in the book and affects his actions for the rest of the story.…

The main character of the novel, Olivia, has not had a steady home environment as she has been shifted to many different foster homes. Although, she is a brilliant student when she is there. Olivia gets arrested for forging some stolen checks and then gets sent to jail. Detention center was her next stop because her foster mom said she was too much work. Ultimately, Olivia serves her time and goes to college, where she is very successful. Olivia’s story is an example of how Corwin structures his book. He uses anecdotes to give readers insight into the students lives. In addition, he organizes the novel into different times of the year so the readers can follow the students in chronological order. Corwin is effective using this strategy because it makes the readers feel apart of the story. The sequencing the novel by seasons and semesters gives readers the feeling that they are apart of the high school. Another strategy Corwin uses is portraying multiple Americas. He does this by showing us the struggle filled lives of most students and the fortunate lives of the others. For example, Toya has to overcome being a teen mother while still getting an education whereas Curt is raised by a single mother, but in Los Angeles’ wealthiest black community. Corwin…

Once upon a time, in a world of its own, stood the prison-like building of Nichols Junior High. Unimposing to any untrained eye idling by on the streets passing by outside, the green and blue clad crowded halls harbored the mischief of troublesome youth running wild. Meanwhile, all others hid in the shadows waiting for the bells to sound and the leashes to be loosened in a mockery of freedom. The cacophony of shouts to gather allies, competitions for dominance, and trade in some good or another only to be smashed under the watchful eye of the wardens draped the entirety of the building. Only when the cells were filled to the brim did a frail sense of quiet try to fight the inevitable losing battle of madness until uproar in one of the cells shattered it once more.…
