William Shakespeare’s Hamlet has no shortage of murder; in fact, most of them are accidental, out for revenge, or greed. Revenge is prominent in the drama. Two specific characters that are driven by revenge are young Hamlet, son of the late king of Elsinore in Denmark, and young Fortinbras, son of the late king of Norway. These princes, driven by motives to clear their father's names after their assassinations, gave up their chance at a life of royalty to ensure justice be served. The first prince, young Hamlet, has a particular way of slowly getting his revenge. Young Hamlet sought revenge after his father was assassinated by his uncle, Claudius. Old Fortinbras and young Fortinbras, father and son, were leaders of Norway. King old Fortinbras fought in a war with King old Hamlet, and in that war old Fortinbras lost his riches and his life. The death of old Fortinbras by Old Hamlet’s sword inspires young Fortinbras’s story. Young Fortinbras, infuriated by the death of his father, decides his revenge will come at the price of all of Denmark. Though his plans seem thwarted by his uncle, who takes over after old Fortinbras, young Fortinbras’s ambition punctures the armor worn by the king of Norway. Unlike young Hamlet, young Fortinbras assembles an army to kill his uncle first. Young Fortinbras had less patience but more initiative to ascertain the success of his revenge. Young Fortinbras personally commits to deceiving Denmark and assembling a group of mercenary soldiers. After dealing with his uncle, young Fortinbras sets up a faux facade; he asks Denmark to allow safe passage through their lands because young Fortinbras plans to “attack the Polacks”.
