In the present and in the past there has been a large debate over literature fanatics of the true existence of William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare is really a character who is honestly very mysterious. As insightful readers we don't much about this person, we know him as the person who wrote amazing plays and sonnets that are used to educate high school students today. The article of "Will the Real Shakespeare Please Stand Up?" was written by an author truly questioning his existence. This article is embodied by three different points that truly reach out to the reader which is the author's purpose, the authors point of view and the author's use of rhetoric.…

In the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Helena says that love is blind, and this foreshadows the actions that Titania and Egeus make when the interests of loved ones are in mind. First, when they argue about the Indian boy, Titania tells Oberon, “Set your heart at rest/ The Fairyland buys not the child of me”(2.1.121b-122). Titania is blinded to the disasters caused by the fight between her and Oberon because of the Indian boy she will not give up and has begun to love. Lastly, while Theseus and Egeus talk about Hermia’s marriage, Egeus says, “As she is mine, I may dispose of her/ which shall be either to this gentleman or to her death”(1.1.42-44). This quote shows that Egeus is blinded by his pride and what he thinks is right. He cannot see…
Both the Capulet family and the Montague family are fools. They think all this fighting will achieve something? Well I hope Christ is looking upon them, for their sake. Now all this fighting has led to the death of a child from each of their families. Romeo and Juliet are dead because of this ludicrous feud, but I will pray for them none the less. I feel as though it is my fault, that I caused all of this, but they are still children of the Lord and it is my duty to look after all of them. I will pray for Romeo and I will pray for Juliet all night in front of the Lord. What if I had told someone about the marriage and the plan to fake Juliet's death? Maybe they would still be with us.…
The poem begins as a recount of past lovers whom a woman once had encounters with for only very brief moments of her life. The belief that these "lips her lips have kissed" were but only momentary passing in her life is enforced in the very opening of the sonnet, as she tells of the forgotten arms she has lain with (1-2). While the character within the story may momentarily be experiencing a feeling of quiet pain, the theme of the poem is suggested as she recites that in fact it were her lips kissing others, she does not consider her lovers kissed by herself, and thus we can recognize her lack of emotional attachment to these forgotten lovers. These…

Identify one sonnet (or other poem) about which you wish to write. In addition, you must locate and discuss at least one piece of secondary criticism (and not more than two) which analyses this poem or passage. The section of your paper that summarises, or paraphrases, or quotes from the secondary source should not exceed 30% of your entire paper. Your main job is to develop a counter-argument: explain why this work of secondary criticism is, in your view, either incomplete, inaccurate, or in need of modification as an account of the poem or passage you have chosen. In your essay, your discussion of the poem or passage should also explain its meaning and significance, commenting in detail on the language and imagery. Use this detailed commentary as evidence to question and revise the analysis provided in the piece of secondary criticism you have chosen. Write an essay of 1500-1700 words (50% of your coursework) following these guidelines:…

How does Shakespeare Present Beatrice and Benedick's relationship as the 'reality' of love and Claudio and Hero's as merely the 'appearance' of it?…
Gender roles and relationships have been among the most commonly explored themes in literature for several centuries. William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of the earlier examples of this, exploring the malleable nature of these roles and relationships. The play starts in ancient Athens which represents a perfect example of a patriarchal society. However, shortly afterwards, the action is moved to the forest where fairies and magic begin to interfere in the traditional order of Athenian society. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, the attempts of men to control women drive the action of the play and gender roles and relationships are changed as magic becomes involved. Furthermore, the dreamlike feeling of the main action of the play is enhanced by a lack of permanent change in the status quo.…
An earlier play entitled, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, by William Shakespeare, is a comedy outlining the destinies of two bothered couples. Shakespeare tactically demonstrates the love of two Athens individuals, Lysander and Hermia. The conflict is, Hermia’s father is against the marriage of the two and insists upon marriage with a man named Demetrius. However, the already complicated situation becomes more complex when Hermia discovers that Helena, a deep-rooted friend, is in love with Demetrius. My initial interest of the play arose during the introduction of this conflict.…
William Shakespeare, the well-known playwright intertwines real life themes into his plays making them powerful literature for all to digest. One of the most meaningful quotes that William Shakespeare composed that holds true even until today follows: “Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall.” These crucial words are found in William Shakespeare’s play Measure for Measure. This quote states that not everyone who sins will get punished as some will rise in superiority for being a villain; and conversely, a mortal who does good will not always succeed as he/she can fall. The quote analyzes both Shakespeare’s and today's society phenomenally. For instance, in Shakespeare's time Richard Ⅲ prolonged superiority as he committed a sin.“He murdered…

If someone does not possess a conscience or any morals, then all of their actions can be considered reasonable to them, but evil by society. The individual may even see their actions as benefiting society. It all comes down to the way we think. The way we perceive good and evil, our beliefs. Our beliefs dictate our everyday actions, for it’s our ideology that defines individuals or even the masses, thus we have stereotypes. In Hamlet, the reader observes (reads) multiple examples of individuals acting without thinking. Such as Claudius killing his brother in order to become king. Only until later in the play did Claudius start experiencing guilt for murdering brother. He then relieves his guilt by praying for forgiveness. As we can see, religious beliefs and alter our perspectives on life itself, allowing certain actions one may have performed reasonable, necessary, and even tolerable. We can see that Claudius subconsciously uses religion as a safe refuge for his sanity.…
