Respiratory Mechanics Lab Report
Respiratory Mechanics 1

Note there is an error in your lab book! The starting radius for the flow tube diameter should be 5mm in each experiment and NOT 6mm.Use your computer link to ADAm for this part of this week’s lab. You are also responsible for the PowerPhys lab report.

Measuring Normal Respiratory Volumes

1) Calculate the minute respiratory volume using the tidal volume and breaths per minute (pump rate).

2) Define the following terms: a. Respiration- The act of breathing, inhaling and exhaling. b. Alveoli - located at the ends of the bronchiole, air sacs in the lungs where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place. c. Diaphragm- the partition separating the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/diaphragm

Use these data to answer the following questions.

FEV1 as % of Vital Capacity | Radius | FEV1 | Vital Capacity | FEV1 (%) | 5 | 3541 | 4791 | 73.9 | 4.5 | 2503 | 3143 | 73.3 | 4 | 1422 | 1962 | 72.4 | 3.5 | 822 | 1150 | 71.4 | 3 | 436 | 621 | 70.2 |

3) What affect does reducing the radius of the air flow tube on respiratory volumes?
Reducing radius of the air flow tube decreases respiratory volume.

Effects of Surfactant on Respiratory Volumes 4) How does surfactant affect the tidal volume?
It minimizes surface tension in the alveoli which makes it easier for the alveoli to increase surface area for gas exchange.

5) How does addition of surfactant affect the total air flow into the lungs?

It affects the total airflow because it allows the air flow into the lungs to be increased because resistance is lowered.

6) Why does surfactant have the affect that it does on total air flow? It minimizes the tension at the surface, which allows the alveoli to increase surface area for gas exchange…we can breathe more and

In this experiment, several physiological parameters were observed in three patients before, during, and after moderate exercise. One of these parameters was the pulmonary airflow, which was recorded utilizing an Airflow Transducer. This device measures airflow using slight pressure differences created by the resistance of a screen inside the device. Pulmonary airflow is the rate of movement into and out of the lungs, and is directly proportional to the pressure difference of the intrapulmonary pressure and the atmospheric pressure, and inversely proportional to the resistance of the lungs (elasticity/diameter of air pathways).1 The BIOPAC program then can convert the airflow to volume of air moved. Pulmonary ventilation is the movement of air in and out of the lungs. A more specific measurement of pulmonary airflow is the minute respiratory volume, which measures how much air is moved into and out of the lungs in one minute (tidal volume*breaths per minute).2 Since both deal with a volume moved per time, they are synonymous, although the parameter is referred to as airflow in this report.15E…

Expiratory reserve volume decreased due to the rapid increase in breath rate. Normal resting breath rate is at an average 11.6 breaths per minute increased to 27 breaths per minute after exercise. The increase in BR causes expiration length to go below its normal 3 second interval. Therefore decreasing ERV by .6 Liters.…

With the mask on the patient's face, and the machine turned on, the patient will feel the force of wind on exhalation. This wind serves two purposes. It prevents the airway from collapsing, and thus prevents periods of apnea. It also keeps the alveoli in the lungs open, and thus improves oxygenation, and decreases un-needed pressure on your heart.…

Attraction of the molecules in the fluid film within the alveoli is what causes surface tension. The water molecules have a higher attraction to each other than the air in the surrounding area causes the fluid film to take up the smallest area possible. Therefore as surface tension force increases alveoli area decreases. Surfactant plays a large part into preventing lung collapse because it lowers surface tension allowing for the alveoli area to increase. If surfactant didn’t regulate the surface tension, then the alveoli would collapse causing lung collapse. Without surface tension the alveoli then are more likely to expand and cause lysing of the alveoli. Either way, surfactant plays an important role in stabilizing the alveolar size.…
