The confederate flag originally stood for southern pride, but most people argued it stood for racism, slavery, and hatred. The negative connotation of the flag did not come until after the Confederacy adopted the flag in 1863. The leaders of the Confederate Army in Virginia wanted a distinctive flag, so they could distinguish themselves from the United States. There were three versions of the confederate flag. The first flag was greatly disliked because of its strong resemblance to the United States flag. The second flag incorporated the battle flag for Virginia and did not last because of aesthetic reasons. The third flag also resembled the battle flag for Virginia, with an all white background and a red vertical stripe, resulting in the third flag not lasting very…

There is much controversy surrounding the idea of patriotism and the iconography of the American flag in today's society. Some believe patriotism is simply the act of supporting the decisions of the leaders of the country. Others say, to be patriotic, people should be outspoken and voice their oppositions to what is going on in the government. Opinions also differ on the idea of what the American flag represents. One opinion of the flags representation is that the flag represents our history, and the formerly mentioned idea of patriotism. Others believe the flag also represents our history as a nation, but these beliefs focus much more heavily on the negative aspects of our history; such as slavery and other injustices carried out by our nation. These people often believe we should find a new iconography for our country's ideas of patriotism. As Barbara Kingsolver states in "And Our Flag Was Still There," "Patriotism seems to be falling to whoever claims it loudest, and we're left struggling to find a definition in a clamor of reaction" (Pg. 1). Therefore, every American's duty is to define patriotism amongst the clamor of reaction, recapture the American flag's representation, and create a new icon for the flag.…

Taking a closer look at why the revolutionaries asked the people to raise and hang their flags outside their homes could answer questions as why the flags were important in the first place. In the article written by Fre´ron, while Fre´ron is talking to the citizens of France he says “Arise then, form up in ranks, unfurl your flags, and led by La Fayette and animated by liberty, your will be invincible!” (Peuple, 1791) This shows a revolutionary telling the people to get up and open up their flags and nothing will be able to hurt them, and that there is other French citizens hanging up their flags too. By Fre´ron saying, “unfurl your flags and animated by liberty,” it shows that the flag has great meaning in loyalty and…
