OB PROJECT (WEEK 4)

Definition:
Spinal Bifida- congenital neural tube defect in which the vertebral spaces fail to close, allowing a herniation of the spinal contents into a sac. There are three types of spinal bifida: spinal bifida occulta, meningocele, and myelomeningocele.

Cause:
In spinal bifida, the vertebral spaces do not close, which allows herniation of the spinal contents into a sac.

Risk factors include:
• Genetic problems
• Infection
• Children born into lower socioeconomic families are at higher risk (thought that poor diet and lack of essential vitamins and minerals may be a contributing factor).
• Exposure to hazardous chemicals and substances
• Previous miscarriage
• Drug and/alcohol consumption
• Maternal age
