My Sister’s Keeper revolves mainly around a thirteen year old girl by the name of Anna Fitzgerald. Anna came into this world in a very unique manner. She was specifically designed to match the rare blood type of her sister Kate. Her parents where insisted my doctors that this would be in the best interest of Kate who was suffering. The day Anna was born, doctors would draw blood from her umbilical cords to donate to Kate. And every time after that when Kate was sick, Anna would have to donate stem cells, bone marrow, and blood. Anna decides that she would refuse to donate her kidney and resorts to legal help. Anna finds a lawyer who is willing to help her solely on the fact of what her parents were doing was wrong. Anna files for medical emancipation. Medical emancipation of a minor is where the individual is no longer restricted to the wishes of their parents and may make their own decision regarding a variety of topics. If it were up to Anna’s parents she would donate her kidney to her sister Kate. Anna stood up for what she thought was right and what she believed in. It was not because she was trying to be selfish or because she was jealous of all the attention Kate was getting from her parents. It was because she had lived her whole life for Kate. She was finally at the age where she made sense of what was going on. She didn’t want to be put on this earth to only help her sister. She wanted to be able to have her own destiny. She wanted to play with friends, play sports and she wasn’t allowed because her parents were too afraid of her getting hurt and not being able to donate to Kate. What her parents were doing to her was depriving her of a childhood. In my opinion it was completely unethical and wrong. I have a daughter of my own and I’m not sure I would take the same measures as the parents did. I love my daughter just as much, but I don’t feel that you should defy nature.
