Research Paper On Achilles
Achilles was born to Peleus, the King of Fthia in Thessaly, and Thetis. When Achilles was born, his mother wanted to make him immortal. Thetis decided to hold him over a divine fire, or in some myths, the River Styx. Peleus saw this and stopped his wife when he saw the child had burned his lips. This gave him the name “Achilles,” meaning one with no lips. She suspended him by his for and caused him to not be immortal on his heel. This would later become Achilles biggest weakness and downfall. Achilles mother then hid him away from the world because she knew of his glorious power but his short life. She didn’t want him to expire so quickly so she raised him on Skyros with the royal family of Lycomedes. In some myths Achilles was disguised as a girl to conceal his identity and short lived fate. Achilles was educated by the wise centaur. Among the students was Hercules, a god of strength. …show more content…
He was persuaded by Odysseus to venture to Troy and recapture Helen. He was equipped with fifty ships and fifty men of his own private army, the Myrmidons. The Myrmidons were fearsome fighters who were transformed from ants by Zeus. Achilles and his army took over 23 cities and they even ambushed the Trojan prince. It was told that if Achilles did not kill a prince before he was 20 years old, he would die. This caused him to sacrifice the prince in honor of Apollo. Apollo was not pleased by this and is why he has a grudge towards Achilles. Overall, Achilles was the confidence of the Greek army. Unfortunately, that pride would be cut

    Homer portrays Achilles as a man with great strength and a true passion for fighting. Both Achilles and Odysseus represent the Greek ideals of what makes an epic hero.
