There are few great satirists who manage to judge their work so finely that it can be considered both a rip-roaring, fantastical adventure story suitable for children and adults alike, as well as a searing attack on the nature of society. In his Gulliver's Travels, Jonathon Swift has done precisely that, and has bestowed upon us one of the great works of English literature in the process. A tale recognised far more widely than it is read, the story of Gulliver--a traveller who is, in turns, a giant, a tiny figure, a king and an idiot--is both excellent fun, as well as thoughtful, witty and wise.

In Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift, Gulliver’s adventures and experiences satirize many aspects of human nature. Pride and arrogance are reoccurring themes that make up the most of Swift’s satire. While pride and arrogance is currently demonstrated by athletes such as Usain Bolt, it is also show by the characters in Gulliver’s Travels.…

Gulliver's Travels is still relevant today because it presents a variety of social critiques and condemnations of branches of human activity that still exist today. I believe the goal in Swift's novel was to create something to achieve just that goal, or the goal of timelessness. It should already be a mediocre testament to this claim that students are required to read portions of Gulliver's Travels during their high school senior year.…

Swift has at least two aims in Gulliver's Travels besides merely telling a good adventure story. Behind the disguise of his narrative, he is satirizing the pettiness of human nature in general and attacking the Whigs in particular. By emphasizing the six-inch height of the Lilliputians, he graphically diminishes the stature of politicians and indeed the stature of all human nature. And in using the fire in the Queen's chambers, the rope dancers, the bill of particulars drawn against Gulliver, and the inventory of Gulliver's pockets, he presents a series of allusions that were identifiable to his contemporaries as critical of Whig politics.…

According to the learning style assessment adapted from Kolb and McCarthy (1983), the researcher style is accommodator/ positivist. A positivist generally adopts a deductive approach usually achieved by looking at causes and facts without taking into account any subjective matters (Collins & Hussey, 2003). Saunders, et al. (2007) described that the positivist approach persist of data collection technique, also known as quantitative research method that can be collected using questionnaires. This approach suits the main proposed research methods, which is the statistical analysis of data gathered by way of a questionnaire. Saunders, et al. (2007) also mentioned that by analysing the data gathered through questionnaire, we would be able to detect the possible relationship between the variables and build a model of the relationships. As the objective of this research is to test numerous hypotheses, using the quantitative method, possible relationship between the factors can be identified and studied further (Creswell, 2009).…

The changing climate has forced its way into everyone’s mind as an unpleasant thought. Global warming, no more a hoax now, has started to show its presence everywhere. It has affected the atmosphere, economy, politics, lifestyle, biodiversity etc. Of all, biodiversity is a clear indicator of changing climate. The indication is made by the chemical, physiological or behavioral changes observed in animal and plant species. There has been a shift in the species diversity towards the regions which were originally cold but have become warm due to the warming of the climate. The research on the effects of climate change on biodiversity has been intensive. The studies have covered several aspects of ‘biodiversity - climate’ interactions. The present paper is an attempt to provide an insight into the major contributions by researchers as reflected in papers published during the last fifteen years in some of the leading journals and discuss the research needs for the future, especially in the context of developing countries.…

Lemuel Gulliver : Lemuel Gulliver is an unremarkable and unimaginative man from middle-class England whose voyages to foreign lands form the central plot. He is morally upright and honest but, as his name suggests, somewhat gullible. As he himself is honest, he naively assumes that everyone else is as honest, and hence believes what he is told. He is an everyman through whose eyes the reader sees and judges the people he encounters.…

Gulliver’s Travels is a classic eighteenth century satirical novel written by Jonathan Swift. It is widely read across the world and has never been out of print since it was first published. In this great masterpiece, we follow the adventures of the main character Lemuel Gulliver, an intelligent and literate man. In contrast to the original work, the 2010 Hollywood adaptation presents us with a dimwitted, yet somewhat humorous character. By portraying the protagonist as an entertaining fool, the work is changed from a satire to a comedy.…

Jonathan Swift’s renowned novel Gulliver’s Travels is possibly the greatest work of literary satire ever written. Ever since its publication, it has been an important and thought-provoking piece in English literature. As defined by a dictionary, satire is “The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues”. Originally, when it was first published, Swift refused to sign the book, fearing prosecution from the government. Swift himself admits that he penned ‘Gulliver’s Travels‘ in order "to vex the world rather than divert it." In this novel, the main character, Gulliver, travels to four very different lands. He is exposed to a vast array of political and social settings, and his view on politics and the human race as a whole deteriorates as the journey progresses. Often thought to be misanthropic, Swift uses satire to express his own unfavorable opinion on humanity, knowledge, and government.…

Jonathan Swift uses the metaphors of Gulliver, Pedro, the Houyhnhnms, and the Yahoos in “ A Voyage to the Land of the Houyhnhnms” to satirize humans so that they could realize that to be human, you cannot go to opposite extremes. Swift has characters to represent man as a complete animal (the Yahoos), as well as characters to represent man as wholly rational being (the Houynhnms). The naïve Gulliver is used to show how man is. The last metaphor of Pedro is used to show how a man can be; a balance of logic and emotion that creates a perfect, individual human.…
