Remember the Titans

In the movie ‘Remember the Titans', there are many management concepts covered throughout the movie and he is the agent in the movie. The players on the Titans are the targets of the influence. ‘Remember the Titans' is the perfect movie for Exam 3. It covers many topics that were on the exam, and this class has given me a different way of looking at the movie. I have seen the movie many times, but I never looked at it from a management perspective. It now makes sense to me to look at a football team, or any other type of sports team, from a management point of view.
Coach Herman Boone, who is played by Denzel Washington, is a very influential person. He is a perfect leader. While it cannot be found out for sure, Coach Boone can be classified under the trait theory of management, that "Leaders are Born". The type of leadership he displays cannot be taught, he is able to bring together two different types of groups to act as one, to respect each other and play together. He shows power in the movie, he has a large capacity to influence others. Using his power, he gets the players to conform and forget how others think they are supposed to act towards each other. The goal specificity is also clear in the movie. Coach Boone expects his team to be ‘perfect', he expects them to win the Virginia State Championship. Former head coach and now assistant coach Bill Yoast, played by Will Patton, is also a very influential person and good leader. He is in charge of the defense and he gets his players to ‘play for him' and they become an almost unstoppable force. Their opponents do not score against them often in the movie.
In the movie, Coach Boone is a master motivator. He does an excellent job of energizing his players, sustaining the motivation, directing the motivation to the right players at the right time, and also knowing when to stop motivating. The satisfaction progression hypothesis is also displayed in the movie. Coach

Pathos was one of the major factors in Coach Boone’s speech. He reached out to his players by talking about the Battle of Gettysburg, a large part of American history. Coach Boone chose Gettysburg because of the history of racism and the Civil War. The atmosphere, full of tension, anxiety, and seriousness made Coach Boone’s speech more of a heart to heart. In the beginning of his speech he talked about the battle and how men died “fighting the same fight we’re still fighting amongst ourselves” (Boone). Coach Boone triggered emotions like remorse, and puts his players in a reflective state. He pointed out that the war may have ended but the hatred is still within their hearts. The players all know about the history of their heritage but after the way Coach Boone talks about it, they realize how terrible their actions of prejudice…

In figuring out who I wanted to write this paper on, many different leaders popped into my mind. I knew I wanted to choose a “sports figure” because playing sports has always been a huge part of my life. Every coach I have had, regardless of the sport, has always been a leader in my eyes so I thought it would be fitting to choose a coach. Coach Tony Dungy is said to be one of the greatest to ever coach the game of football. I would have to agree with that statement. I have been a fan of Tony Dungy ever since he became the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 2002. I look up to, and respect him as a coach and as a person. I wanted to write this paper about him in hopes of learning more about his leadership style and what he thinks it takes to be a leader. Since I aspire to be like him as a coach, I want to leave a lasting positive impression upon the young individuals that I teach. I believe that that is exactly what Tony Dungy did for all of the players he has coached. He used his abilities, skills, values, and ethics to inspire, motivate and coach his teams on to victory.…

For example, Coach White is the one who takes the responsibility for the first loss of the team. He could of blamed the team, or he could of gotten furious at them for not winning. Instead, he chose to take the responsibility by himself. He never reinforces the team to emulate the other teams. Instead, he tells the team that it is his fault for not training them on hills, and he even finds a place with hills for them to practice. He also takes the responsibility for having the Diaz family in their team by adjusting their practice time to not overlap with the Diaz’s job as pickers. All the responsibilities he took over for the team shows that he truly cares for the…

Due to these they lost a game, because in the filed they didn’t work together as a team. Other example is when the players understood each other on the film and didn’t understand each other outside the field, for example when sunny asked them to come with him to a restaurant and the black boys got offended and insulted by the restaurant manager. They were told to go and eat at the back where cabbage was thrown because they were seen as lesser people. One of the climax in the film is when the film was about to end at the last game when the Black Hand and the white hand were holding the ball up together. They were trying to show that they have all won together as a one team. The final resolution in the film was when they all came together as one at Gerry’s funeral. A lot of these things that happened changed the community, and also the individuals a lot because after winning the state championship the community became as one. The Boone’s family were finally accepted into the community, it also had a change in some of the main characters including Gerry and Julius at the beginning of the movie they were both very prejudice because of the community they lived in. This changed overtime as the movie went on due to some of these complications like the scene when they had a fight and then after the fight they both…

In the beginning it is not who is in charge. Initially, I assumed Coach Herman Boone is in charge. However, the white students did not believe he was in charge. All of the players did not respect him as the leader. It becomes clear, while still in the forming stage, that Coach Boone is in charge during the second scene when he pairs the players up with bus buddies.…

Suburban Virginia schools have been segregated for generations, in sight of the Washington Monument over the river in the nation's capital. One Black and one White high school are closed and the students sent to T.C. Williams High School under federal mandate to integrate. The year is perceived through the eyes of the football team where the man hired to coach the Black school is made head coach over the highly successful white coach. Based on the actual events of 1971, the team becomes the unifying symbol for the community as the boys and the adults learn to depend on and trust each other. Remember the Titians was based on a true story of the major events that took place in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971 when African-American football coach Herman Boone was hired to guide an integrated, but racially split with the high school team T.C. Williams Titans. Angry, stubborn and a stiff employer, Boone faces a casual reception from the team's players as well as an awkward relationship with assistant coach Bill Yoast, a local white man with advantage and a tradition of winning who was bypassed for the job. It is clearly established that Bill has feelings of revulsion for having to be an assistant under a black man. As the two men learn to overcome their ignorance, they realize that they have much in common like integrity, honor, and a strong work ethic. They work together to transform an angry group of unfocused players into a dynamic winning team of responsible young men. Throughout the process, they managed to show their individuality from a divided community and ensure that Virginia will always “Remember the Titans.”…

Leadership was automatically shown in the beginning of the movie. After the plane crash Nate Ruffin was there to help identify the bodies of his teammates. Ruffin is the co-captain of Marshall’s football team and due to the plane crash the president of the school, Dedmon wanted to suspend the football program. He wanted to suspend the program because the people in the community felt as if it would be disrespectful to play and they have to come to a field to see what they lost. Also, he wanted to end the program because there were only four football players left. Ruffin takes the responsibility in his hands for the program not to end by going to the closed meeting that included the board of trustees and president of the school. There at the meeting Ruffin protests that they shouldn’t end the football program because all of Marshall is behind him and to prove this he had the whole school outside and had them chant “We Are Marshall” over and over. Ruffin also doesn’t want the program to end because he felt as if his teammates didn’t die in vain. His teammates died for what they loved doing and the only way to honor them is by winning games. Due to Ruffin’s protest, the board of trustees and president decided to keep the football…

There is no doubt that Remember the Titans is chalked full of moments of triumph and despair. Coach Boone is constantly a source of leadership for his players and eventually the entire community. There are many times when power come into play both on and off the field. Some examples of this power that is demonstrated in the movie are referent power, coercive power, need for power (both personalized and socialized), legitimate power and reward power. These leadership concepts are constant through the movie as well as in specific clips.…

Have you ever imagined not having a coach for your sports team? Or why your coach is so successful? Even though they are very demanding, they’re essential for any team’s success. “I demand a lot out of my players, but we have fun and I give them room to learn and make mistakes,” said Coach Mike Bates. They provide structure and are the heart and souls of each team. Coaches have to love the game. The team reflects the coach, if he’s successful so will you be. The coach needs to be disciplined and teach the fundamentals of the game. They should instill moral values into the team.…

Coach Boone is a great example of a leader. He knows he faces a tough year of teaching his "hated" team. But, instead of listening to the hating town or administrators, Boone pushes his team to their limits and forces good relationships between players, regardless of race. His vision for the team involves getting the players concerned in what the team needs to become, and not what it is supposed to be; a waste.…
